Day 7 – BOAT DAY !!!!

My favorite day every year is always our Boat Day with Captain Kevin on Born to Rhumb (www.borntorhumb.com). Well, this year it’ll have to settle for a tie with Best Birthday Present ever. :)

I bounced out of bed at 6:45, made coffee and starting rousing the troups, which is no easy feat considering the “kids” are not morning people and had been out late the night before. We make it out of the house at 7:45 and head to the National Park Dock. We get there just before and wait … and wait … and wait. Now it’s 8:15. Hmmmm. I call the Captain and confirm that we are at the right place and he says “Yes, we’ll be there at 9, like always”. Oooops. I could of sworn we used to leave at 8, but Kevin tells me that was quite a few years ago. Well, everything happens for a reason. We get to head over to Deli Grotto for some breakfast treats and the boys get to go back to the villa to get the underwater housing for Gus’ camera, which get us shots like these.

All as is well as the boat pulls up at 8:45 and we head out.

We head over to Sopher’s Hole to clear customs, then make our way to the caves for a snorkeling stop.

At this point, we all start picking up Gus’ camera and snapping pics. We have about 315 pictures of boat day, and a total of about 450 for the entire trip!

We head over to the Indians for a quick snorkel. Then, it’s off to lunch at the Willy T. Love the Honey Stung chicken here. We were early so had the bar to ourselves, playing great music, French the bartender was awesome, we danced, we drank, we laughed – probably the most fun I’ve ever had at 11:30 in the morning!

We bid our fond farewells to French and head to my favorite spot on earth. Sandy Spit. For me, there is no more spiritual place. My yearly trips really do recharge me somehow, and the hour or two spent there soothes me. This year was no exception. As we approach, I play “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley and “Many Rivers to Cross” by Jimmy Cliff. I take my time swimming ashore, just taking it all in. Ahhhhh.

Others had a less serene, but no less joyous, approach.

I head over to my special spot on my special island, look out over the water, feel the sun and wind and have a cleansing weep. When I’m done, I walk over to rejoin my group, tell them all how much I love them and give them a hug. Captain Kevin breaks out a BIRTHDAY CAKE he brought ashore and everyone sings Happy Birthday to me … on Sandy Spit … really, can it get any better!!

We build our wish-man-of-rocks and pause for a moment’s reflection before we head back to the boat. This little isle never, ever disappoints.

It’s time for Soggy Dollar!! We hit White Bay with a
vengeance, and I have to confess at this point we were a bit raucous. We spent a lovely few hours swilling painkillers, lounging in hammocks and playing the ring game.

We head back to Cruz Bay and enjoy a fabulous sunset.

What a day!
