Hey all..hope you all had good turkey days...so our beloved cannon d10 has had a lens mishap...probably my fault...but I am hopeful we can fix it. First off...I bought it in June so I *think* it's under warranty....second....I think I remember someone on this forum getting good customer service with cannon...my husband thinks it's a lost cause, but I would love to have a positive outcome...For what it's worth..I get a "lens error...please restart camera" everytime we turn it on...grrrrr....any insight on how I should proceed?

I'm one of the people that reported getting good customer service from Canon.
I would call them and let them know what you're seeing. My guess is that they'll have you send it back to them for repair (which in our case ended up being a replacement because they didn't have the part they needed for the repair on hand).
Good luck!

Another one with a great customer service experience, mine was out of warranty by a month or two. The process was simple and just like Augie, mine was replaced. Even ended up with an extra battery, as they have you return the camera without it and the new one had one.
Just call and be nice/sensible and I'd be really surprised if you don't get it taken care of.

I have the same camera same problem. I'm actually sending mine back tomorrow for the second time. The first time they sent it back and said they could not replicate the problem. I have shaken my camera just a little and had it come back on. Sometimes taking the battery out for a bit works, sometimes not. So far it always eventually comes back on, just not at the moment I wanted it for. It's Very frustrating. I am hoping that they will be able to replicate the issue this time and fix it. The first time was very quick, I think I had the camera back in 9 days. I am hoping for the same this time. I will post the outcome.

Try holding the lens and gently twist...the lens gets stuck occasionally and you should hear a click. The camera won't work if the lens is stuck. This was my daughters problem...worked fine after that

I think you really need extended warranties on these underwater compact digital camera's. They claim to be indestructible, but I think really they can only stand up to so much. Our Olympus did great for about 18 months then died also....we just bought another, with a 2 month extended warranty to get us to 3 years total.
best of luck....

Just to add to this, I haven't checked the Canon test requirements, but the Olympus is rated to 33' depth. When I read how this is tested, they say it can withstand 1 hour continuous at 33' depth. This isn't the same as in and out of salt water 15 times during the day, mixing with sun and sand. That's what we exposed our camera to, and it did great for a long time. We washed it every evening in fresh water as recommended, but eventually it succumbed.
These cameras are really great, just don't expect it to last forever.

So here's an update on my D10. I sent the camera out on 12/3. The repair center received it on 12/7. They had it repaired and shipped out the next day. I received it on 12/10, along with some paper work which included the service details.
"We have examined the product according to your request and it was found that the optical unit was inoperative, making the camera function improperly. The optical assembly was replaced. Other electrical andjustments, inspections, cleanings, and parts replacements were carried out."
I filed this claim on the last day of the 1 year warranty. This repair is now under warranty for 3 months, which will get me through my next STJ trip.
If you haven't already, go to the canon web site and file there to send your camera in for a repair. It is very easy and Canon really has great service.

Thats great news, you were lucky to get it on the last day! We understand these cameras can take a beating, but if they fail you can get them fixed well under warranty. I noted in the Olympus extended warranty I think there's one free checkup included where they'll check everything out and service the seals. I'll surely take advantage of that. Everyone should get the extended warranties for these underwater compact cameras.
By the way, we picked up our replacement Olympus on cyber Monday, it was discounted $50, and the extra 2 years of warranty cost.....drum roll please.....$49.99!

Do you think they planned that one?
