Heading to St John trip #5 in June. This year we went to Eleuthera and really liked it. We have decided to alternate ST John with a different island. Looking at Vieques , has anyone been there? I love to snorkle so this is #1. Also safety is a consideration.

My daughter and SIL have been twice and really love it - it sounds alot like St John 20 years ago when they talk about it - they aren't snorkelers so I don't know about that.

I haven't found the snorkeling so great in Vieques--but it has the biobay which is fabulous--vieques is really laid back and has some lovely beaches--safety was not an issue for us when we were there.

John and I are going next month for the first time and I will do a comprehensive report on the OT forum. We're treating it as a scouting trip for a possible longer term stay, so are planning on really getting around to see what's what.

How about Anegada? I heard the water around the island is absolutely beautiful though not sure about accomodations, etc. Is this a day trip only?

We went to Vieques last spring for 4 days or so- Esperanza. It actually had pretty good snorkling in that bay. And the population per mile on the island is similar to STJ- just in Spanish.
If you go, the Biobay is a must. Take the tour that is a kayak. I think it was "Abe's Tours".
