Need somewhere to go by October 29, on AA

This isn't the most serious problem in the world, for sure...but we have a near-$2000 credit that needs to be used, with American Airlines, before October 29.

When I canceled these tickets a year ago, I figured we would use them to fly to London or Paris well before they expired. Now that the clock is ticking on the time to use them up, we want to stay closer to home, for personal reasons. AA doesn't fly direct from Boston to too many places... and some of those places, like San Francisco, well the fares are so cheap, we would barely make a dent into the credit, and it seems like every place I'd like to stay out there in Carmel/Monterey/SF/Napa is booked in October.

I'm thinking Costa Rica or somewhere in the Caribbean, (not St. John; I like to save STJ for winter). ?

If we go to Anguilla, there's a full day of layover in Miami, which we know and love, so it's a good option.

But Costa Rica is an enticing choice as well.

If anyone has any thoughts/wisdom to share, thank you!

Thoughts... not wisdom...

Knowing nothing about Anguilla except from VickiH's report (which is enough to make one wish to go there), if I had that option combined with staying on South Beach for a layover, that would be my choice.

Have a wonderful time wherever you decide.

I'd go to Anguilla in a heartbeat! Grenada also intrigues me. Costa Rica... I've heard nothing but glowing reports! Sun4MySoul had a great time there! How about Hawaii?

I think you have a deadline for booking the tickts and another year to actually travel. I don't think you have to complete the travel in the first year. The clock resets for another year once the tickets are issued. You could, for example, book tickets this month to go to STJ in the winter or Calif in the spring.

Call AA and check that option out.

We just started looking at Costa Rica for a trip next year. All I can say at this point is the airfare will definitely put a dent in the credit 8)

I started a thread a few months ago that may have some useful tips and links.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm pretty sure I have to fly by the date I canceled, but I'm going to check it out. It would be great to not have to go somewhere right now.

Actually, I just got an email from them!

(I decided to email so as to more easily document everything). They were extremely kind--they offered, as a goodwill gesture for such long association with them, to replace the tickets with a voucher which I will receive in 6-8 weeks.

I have to say, I have been extremely impressed with the customer service from both AA and Jetblue recently.

I'm relieved not to have to go anywhere. We just had a stressful medical-related week away from home last week, and traveling isn't appealing at all. Plus it's so pretty here now I am content to stay home.
