My son, wife and two boys (3 and 4) are planning a trip to STJ in late February. Does anyone recommend a car rental and should they rent in STT or STJ? They will be staying in Coral Bay.

They definitely need a car rental.

We like to rent from Budget on STT and take the car ferry over. The rental itself is less expensive and then you pay one car ferry fee for everyone instead of paying for a taxi and people ferry on STT (the latter being more expensive if you've got a couple people or more). I also like having to load up luggage only once. And with a 3 and 4 year old, they'd be able to install the car seats at the airport and go and not have to mess with it until they were on their way back home. From what I've heard, STT cab drivers don't allow you to use car seats so the kids have to sit on laps.

But others here are believers in renting on STJ and they will probably chime in as well :)

I am a STJ car rental person, but as long as it works with their flights, I would think that renting in STT with 2 little ones would be MUCH easier!

Welcome!

There are many, many threads on this very issue.

Just poke around over the past couple of weeks to see several discussions about this subject on the forum (prominently labeled "car rental question" or variations thereof) or you can search "car rental" and yield the same results.

:) Hi!

We have rented both ways and find that each has good
things to offer. Renting on STJ gives peace of mind
if anything goes wrong with the vehicle...since the owners of it are close by to assist with repairs or
replacement. Also, it can provide you with in town
parking most times at their lots. But in renting here
you do have to do the taxi and ferry deals and if you
are patient and don't mind the cost or time it can take...then that is ok too.

Renting at airport on STT can be great too...you just pick up your car and out the door you go! Good thing about this is that we like the fact that we don't have to go and hang around the airport so long
before departure. We take an early car barge back and
go on a sightseeing adventure on STT before leaving.
But be sure you are comfortable driving in STT from
the airport to Red Hook ferry before renting there...the traffic, driving on the left and road signs can make your hair stand up on end some times!

Like I said, we've done both several times and it works for us. If I had to give a preference I guess
it would be to rent on STT for the convience.

Hope they have a great time!!

Expanding on the rent on STT/STJ debate:
When renting on STJ you must obviously pay for a taxi from the airport to Red Hook and the ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay. What would 2 people spend on that? Id prefer to rent on STJ, but dont want to spend a small fortune getting there only to ultimately pay for a rental anyways. Just wondering if the added cost of taxi & ferry would be worth it to me. Also, is it a huge pain in the rear end carrying luggage throughout this?
