Does St John Have?

True story...I swear...
When we tried (the 2nd time) to go to RDU to start our vacation, we ran into a neighbor who happened to be on our flight. We told her our story and mentioned that we were trying to get to St Thomas.
"Really? I'm from St Croix!"
(Finally...I'd placed the accent. Every Redneck nearby assumed she was Jamaican and, despite my explanation that every black person with an accent didn't come from Jamaica, they failed to understand and called her Jamaican anyway)
But I digress...
So, last Friday, I saw her and she asked how the trip was. I told her how we made it to St John after many hours of travel.
"Did you have to stay on St Thomas before you went to St Johns?" (She added the S, not me)
I told of the water taxi adventures.
"I've never been to St Johns"
"Oh it's great (blah blah blah...gushes about the National Park and the beaches)"
"Do they have police and fire departments there?"
"Ummm...yea...they have a police dept in Cruz Bay and a funny little substation out in Coral Bay. They have 2 fire stations too"
"But you have to go to St Thomas to buy your food, right"
"No...we bring a lot but they have stores on St John...not like Kroger, but stores the same"
"Hmmm...I should go some time"
"You should"
Now...this is a person who was raised 40 miles away from St John and didn't know they had fairly basic Civil-type services and grocery stores.
The moral of the story...I'm not sure there is one, but it puts the newbie who asks "Can I buy X on St John?" into a new perspective for me.
