Canon camera help!

The bad news is I had a camera I loved but was heartbroken when I left it in a taxi.

The good news is I get to get a new camera!
I can't decide between getting a Canon D10 or a Canon G11. It will be used as a general, everyday camera I can carry in my purse. I like being able to take underwater pics, but if the pics of the G11 are really that much better than the D10's, I'll just buy the housing when I go on another vacation. Thanks... the forum hasn't let me down yet!
I'm open to advice if you think there's a better camera than the two I picked out there!

I love Canon cameras. Everyone in my family has one. I have an older point and shoot (SD 600) with the underwater housing. I prefer the housing since it goes deeper and I use it scuba diving. The only time the housing leaked is when I closed it wrong. Otherwise it has been great. If it was me I would go for the camera with the housing rather than the underwater camera.

Since it sounds like you would be willing to pay for and use a case for the D10, that kinda renders the unassisted UW capability of the D10 moot, unless you have other activities it would also be useful for such as skiing, boating, etc.
Therefore, it could more likely depend what kind of camera user you are and what your “photography personality” is. The D10 would be great for the less demanding grab and shoot kind of person, whereas the D11 would enable you to do a lot more and get better results, but only if you are the type so inclined to go after those results on both a creative and technical level.
For example, the fact that the D11 lens goes 28mm wide and out to 5x, combined with that “vari-angle” viewfinder that lets you shoot all sorts of cool angles and perspectives are two things that really float my boat, but could mean jack squat to somebody else. The D10 is a camera you would never have to read the manual, whereas IMO you would be wasting your money if you bought the D11 and never read the manual, so I would suggest that maybe you consider letting your inclinations about these matters guide your decision.

I personally wouldn't buy the D10 to use as an everyday camera. I own the D10 but it's used pretty much exclusively around the beaches and underwater. I use my other (rather old) Canon SD850IS to take everyday photos.
The D10 takes decent photos on land. However, I have a feeling that the more you open and close the slot where you put a battery and a memory card in, the quicker the seal (the rubbery material) around the slot might wear out, which will result in leaking. Maybe I'm just paranoid... but I prefer not using the D10 as an everyday camera.
I don't own the G11, so can't really speak for it. But if my SD850IS stops working, I may consider getting the G11.

Thanks! I've ruled out the D10. I had my heart set on the G11, but the S90 is cheaper and almost as good... decisions, decisions!

I would recommend the G11 as in my opinion it takes a lot better photos. It's the best compact camera Canon have. I will get my G11 on Saturday and I can't wait. We own a D10 but are not overly thrilled with it. As Pickle said, on land it takes mediocre pictures. My old Canon A720is takes much better pictures. The advantage with the D10 is that it's very convenient and easy to use while snorkeling. Not for scuba.
The S90 would be an option, but the focus is better on the G11. The S90 is also much smaller, so it depends on how you like it.
I know many are thrilled about their D10, but we are not.
I hope I can post some G11 pics in November.
