How about a brief story on how you came to live on the island. Years of planning?, on a whim?, etc. I'm sure myself and hundreds of other members are dreaming the dream. As jealous as I am I'd love to hear your story.

I have always loved Ruth's story. Maybe she'll post it again?

Mine is not nearly as good as Ruth's but....

My hometown hasa STJ connection. One friend lived on island after college, so another friend joined him, and then one left and another came, and then...well you get the picture.
One of those friends was an ex boyfriend and we kept in touch over the years. I was single, he was living on an island and I had some extra cash in my pocket so I hopped on a plane to visit for a long weekend.

I was smitten...looking back it was the island, not him, so I took a few months to quit my job, sell my car, and pack up my life into my parent's baement and moved.

I enoyed my first 2 weeks on island with Carnival and then a large early season hurricane. I was convinced that someone was trying to tell me something, but I stayed..on island...but not long with the ex

5 apartments, 3 cars, half a dozen(or more)jobs, hundreds of friends,a couple thousand rum drinks, and an infinite number of grains of sand later and it was time for me to head back to the states to help my family with my grandmother.

A friend I had met in Alaska doing seasonal work had a brother on St. John and said he was coming down to do more seasonal work, asked if I want to come. I was living in Michigan, and figured what the hell. I got rid of almost everything I owned and packed two duffel bags. Three weeks later I was here. No job, no place to stay, about $600 in my pocket. That was 11 years ago. Having lived in Michigan and the Midwest for my entire life, my memories were divided by the season...and since it always feels like summer here...I can hardly believe 11 years have gone by. It hasn't always been easy, but I wouldn't change a thing. I'm finally home.
