We stayed here twice. It depends on what you want. We are staying in something bigger now but would stay here again in a heartbeat.
It is clean, very reasonable rate, beautiful view, small stocked refrigerator with water,
pop, juice, coffee, yogurt, coffeecake, fruit and snacks.
Owners live above but never bother you and are very helpful with anything you need.
Beautiful porch and prep kitchen area on the deck with a grill. We cooked a couple simple meals and had everything we needed.
View is spectacular of Coral bay. Nice umbrella table to have breakfast and enjoy sunrise.
Drawbacks, the road is very rough getting up to. You definitely need a 4x4. Refrigerator is dorm size if you need much space.
location is perfect for North shore beaches and restaurants in Coral Bay just minutes away.

Thanks.
Just the type of info I was looking for.
Does the building stand "freely", or would we be sharing the space with other families?
Thanks again, and always

Hi Jim
We also stayed here. Actually it is a family home.
They have just taken the 2 downstairs bedrooms
and made them into 2 seperate rentals. So you
actually only have a small to moderate size room
with bath that you are staying in,it does have
a door in each room to the outside. We were in
the first or front bedroom. It had a small window
unit air and a large floor fan. It stayed quite
warm in there day and night so we had to keep the
floor fan on continously. Understand that you
can't cook in the room. The owners have a upper
deck set up with items you need to cook/grill and
this area is to be shared with any tentants that
may be staying in the second room. The road and
driveway up to the house is the "driveway from
----!" By the end of four nights we would rather
have been driving the John Head Road. That is just
our opnion.
The bed was comfortable and the offerings that
stocked the small fridge were very good and much
appreciated. The shower was lovely.

Hey MahoJim,
We've stayed at Sailview and will be staying there on our next trip. A small point of clarification. It's not really a "family home" that they've decided to rent out. Mike (one of the owners) built the house with the intent of having their home on the top floor, and have two rental units below. You never hear the owners Mike & Eileen at all. They are completely unobtrusive, but also very helpful if you need anything.
It is not completely private in that the two rental units are next door to one another. But, that's as private as two rooms next to each other at Caneel. Although we chatted with the folks in the other room, we never felt that they were in our business.
Many of the amenities of a villa are available at Sailview too. They include a grill, refrigerator, microwave, outdoor kitchen sink and deck. They also have beach chairs and coolers. All this for about $111 a night in the off season. There is no better value in my opinion. Sure, you can get some good deals if you're sharing a villa with friends, but if you're just a couple this is hard to beat. And, as mentioned often, it is very clean and comfortable.
Re: the road. Yep, it's bumpy and has pot holes. We were unable to stay at Sailview during our last trip because they did not have availability, but we drove up to see them and have a drink (or three!). As we were driving up their road, we sort of chuckled because we had forgotten what a ride it really was. We were not put off by it though.
On a final note... what I've been able to tell about your personality over the forum, I really think that you and Mike would get on like a house on fire. Both Mike and Eileen have lived interesting lives. They really are special, and great people.
That's my 2+ cents!

One last thought...
There are no kids at Sailview. Mike & Eileen do not have children, and they don't rent to small children. The rooms are really sized for two adults.

Thanks all for the info.
Still poking around...
Looks like we'll be looking for something a little more east bound, if not over Coral Bay, perhaps somewhere further?...
2 couples, a.c., (pool?)
Help!!!
The research, with the help of the forum family, will hopefully land our weary butts on STJ again over /during the July 4th week of 2011.
Newbie in tow.
No reservations, but still- can't wait!!!
Help!
