Hi all! Turns out our New Year's resolution was to lurk in January, lurk in February, then introduce ourselves in March, after the snow began to melt in Chicago. Nice to meet you! We have gotten more than a few laughs and happy moments due to your kind, humorous, and informative postings on this forum! We've been to St. John 3 times, and are going again this June. The island is undoubtedly the site of the most enjoyable experiences we have ever had on any beach, in any water, on any planet  !!!
However, ashamed to say,,don't know the exact location of Joe's BBQ. Where is it? Never having eaten there, would appreciate your reviews as well. Also, this trip, we are taking "Jiji", our kids grandad from Japan. Plan to stay at either Gallows Point or the new condo up the road, Palm Terrace. Father-in-law is 74, fairly fit, willing to sacrifice golf for snorkeling with his grandchildren. He understands it's not necessary to pack a blue business suit. We want to be able to walk to Cruz Bay. Where would you stay, Gallows or Palm Terrace?Five people(beautiful wife, 2 kids ages 8 & 11, grandfather, and me). Thanks much...everyone's comments and photo's have reignited our passion for Francis, Salt Pond, Hawksnest, Vie's, Cinnamon, Waterlemon, donkeys and dinghies!
Warm regards,
Dave

We'll be down the end of June for a couple of weeks also and love Gallows.

Not sure it just wouldn't be a wee bit cramped for five folks in one unit. I think if you took an upstairs unit with the loft bedroom, and the kids sleeping on a pull out downstairs that might work.

I think a bit too small for five.

Good to meet ya', Dave. I'd suggest a villa for a group of 5 people. But that's just me talkin'. I like my space. I know lots of people want to be close to Cruz Bay but our family prefers the quiet and privacy of a villa.

I def think Gallows would be a wee bit cramped for 5, unless you took 2 units. Just remember that the rates posted are for 2 people, and extra kids are are extra !!! Can get alittle pricey!
Palm Terrace is very close and very nice. The 3 bedroom in humongous! Also, Lavender Hill is right across the street from Gallows. We will be there next month.

Welcome to the fourm! I would suggest that you at least consider a villa instead of 2 units at Gallows. It will likely be cheaper, for one thing. Plus, you get your own swimming pool, sure to be a hit with the kiddos! There are lots of nice places quite close to town.

Uncle Joes is just OK, in my opinion. I like their sauce, but we found the chicken to be quite dry, and John thought the ribs were tough. We did like the side dishes though. There's a new BBQ place, Candies, that just opened near Starfish Market, and we are planning to try them next trip, to compare with Uncle Joes.

Blasphemy about Uncle Joe's ... Just kidding. We all have our opinions, but we love them. Hubby ESPECIALLY loves the ribs. And the sides are always good! Plus, its a deal!

I can't believe you haven't eaten at Uncle Joe's. All you have to do is follow your nose in Cruz Bay and you're there.

Welcome!!!!!!
Count me as another vote for the ribs. We save Joe's for our second to last night (yes I'm a creature of habit), after cooking on the boat for 7 days, I can't wait to eat something that good, that I didn't cook, and don't have to clean up from.

Dave,

If you copy this website - you will see an excellent map of Cruz Bay.

To get to Joe's BBQ:

1) You head "left" from the ferry dock
2) As you pass the Post Office (on your right)
3) Take that left onto North Shore Rd
4) Joe's BBQ is right there on that left corner!

Enjoy!! It is awesome!

Husband and I ate at Uncle Joe's for the first time this past trip. It is somewhat confusing to recognize the place-I don't remember that there's a sign on the "hut"-in fact we knew roughly the whereabouts and actually asked for directions at the info stand which was right next to it  Think it's painted yellow or light green???

Thought the portions and the prices were good. We got chicken and it was fine. I tend to think most things taste better on St. John-must be the vacation atmosphere, so I'm probably biased when asked about food. :)

We stayed at one of the Gallows units years ago and think they'd be tight for 5, but your call.

Have fun planning!
