Cruz Bay dock porters--how much?

I have never used the porters at the Cruz Bay ferry dock to move my bags, but am thinking I might this time.

So, how much do they cost/what is their standard tip? Does anyone know? I think we have paid $2-3 a bag at Red Hook but have not used porters there for a couple of years either. I am wondering if the going rate has changed. Thanks!

I pay $2 for each of 2 bags at Red Hook and at Cruz Bay as the time expended to get the bags to a boat or taxi is minimal. At the Airport I give him $8 or $10 for the 2 bags as he is getting me through the airport expeditiously which I truly appreciate and for me it's worth the extra expense.

That sounds about right to me.

Where are bags being ported from and to?

Not far, just from the ferry to the end of the dock. Normally we'd do it ourselves since it is such a short distance but we are both at the tail end of recuperating from a bout of food poisoning and not at 100%. I'm thinking $2/bag should be fine for this particular segment. Thanks!

That's even an option? For us husbands, it's usually "Get the bags boys. then get the car. then go unpack. We'll be at JJ's!"

$2 is what we've done in the past and I've slipped them a $1 ea. on the off load from the CA ferry.

Not meaning to high jack this thread...but does anyone know if there is somewhere at Redhook we could leave bags while we go for a bit to eat? Im thinking even if we use Rachel we will still have about an hr to wait for the ferry...so we thought we could get a bite to eat since it will be around 5 and we'll have that outta the way when we get to STJ...I know there is a place inside that sells drinks...but I have never notcied if they sell food or not...or if we would need to walk somewhere..and dont wanna drag the bags...just curious if the porters could watch them..or possibly somewhere to leave them so they would be safe..
Thanks !!!

Generally, my experience has been if you use the porter at the ferry and turn your bag over to them then your stuff will be fine. You may even want to slip them a little extra just in case.

Of course I never leave anything like jewelry or money with anyone at home or anywhere. I always take that kind of stuff with me in my backpack.

But your stuff should be fine as long as you let them know what you're doing so they can keep an eye out.

I used a porter to watch our large bag for about two hours just a week ago. It was nice not to keep all our stuff with us, but I will say keep an eye on it when they load boats. we were taking the ferry to charlotte amiele and the younger kid took our bag to the red hook ferry. I caught it but if I hadn't it would have sucked...... Oh I gave him 3 bucks ..........
