After 5 yrs returbing to the same place on St.John, this was our best ever trip!Two weeks of 85 degree weather, 1 rain shower at night, and water temps like bath water. A real highpoint:
our annual lunch at Shipwreck. I always order whatever quesadilla they have, but this time the cook outdid himself(herself?. On the menu was a herb encrusted chicken & sausage quesadilla, with roasted red peppers, cheese, olives....TO DIE FOR! adding the sausage to the chicken added quite the "bling" to an ordinary entree.
When we return next year, i will call ahead to see what day this might be on the menu...then we'll go more than once!
I urge you to ENJOY-and if not available-ask when it will be!

Yesterdays Braised Beef Brisket is even better today as a Cuban style open face sandwich on Ciabatta bread with Olive-Caper Sauce and garlic mash potatoes. You know you want it. It’s Friday you can exercise tomorrow.[/i]

you know, we went to shipwreck like 10 years ago and didn't like it. Guess it shows how one negative experience can screw us up....but we keep seeing these positive posts, we'll go back this year, the recipes sound awesome....

Thanks sooooo much for the link to Chef Jim. I hope lots of people request the chicken/sausage quesidilla so it stays on the menu!
We have 363 days til we return! Sigh........
PS. After the first Bushwacker or Limin in de coconut, you don't even feel the seats!

He had done the brisket the last time I was there and it was VERY good! One of the sides was the thin fried onions (I am sure there is a fancy culinary name) and those were wonderful as well! That's very cool that he puts the menu of the day on Facebook.

Oh, and the seating is a few booths but mostly bench seating. It is wood, but it's finished so it's not like you get splinters in your rear. And I think that style of seating is really accommodating for most people/parties.

Yeah, and the barstools are really uncomfortable. Definitely sit in the booths.

Shipwreck is always on the “must do” list because it holds a special place in our memories. We first went there on the third day of our first STJ trip in 2005. That day is described as follows in that old trip report:

Wednesday is the highly anticipated daysail on White Wing out of Coral Bay. We had the boat to ourselves and after deliberation with Clark as we motored out of Coral, we decided to do the Roadtown, Indians, and Caves trip.

After a 45 min. stop in Roadtown where we shopped while he did customs (my daughter and wife got to steer the boat on the way over – a huge kick), we snorkeled the Indians and the Caves, swung through the harbor on Norman Island around the Willy T., and took the scenic route back to Coral Bay through an area where whales are known to frequent (didn’t see any) and got back as evening fell. (We met Clark in Cruz Bay next day to check back into customs)

Q: “Does this steering wheel turn the sails?” A: (after much laughter) “No honey it turns the rudder”

The sailing was wonderful. The White Wing is a clean, swift boat. And man, can he handle that boat – fun to watch. Clark makes good drinks and sandwiches, plays good music, and is interesting to talk to – turns out he grew up in New Jersey and learned to sail and fish here.

My daughter exclaimed that she thought the snorkeling was good at Salt Pond the day before, but the snorkeling at the Indians “blew it away” (apparently she is already an expert). Depth reader on boat said forty feet and you could see clear down to bottom. Fascinating variety of rock formations and coral at the Indians, more fish at the Caves.

Back on shore in the dark, we are deciding between Island Blues and Shipwreck Landing for dinner. Island Blues had given us a maybe better for lunch kind of vibe so went with Shipwreck. Very cool. Had good live music, with various patrons feeling no pain dancing or even singing with the band. Great blackened snapper, Mahi, and some of the best fish and chips I’ve tasted for my daughter. Good bang for buck here.

Also had a blackout while waiting for food (band too loud? Maybe the guitar was turned up to 11). Caused much merriment in and around the bar. The speed with which the generator was fired up restoring power to restaurant gives the impression that this is not an infrequent occurrence.

We have to slow down for our first STJ donkeys on the drive back to Estate Lindholm. All in all, a pretty fantastic day.

(and still one of the best vacation days ever)

We love Shipwreck, but didn't try it until our fourth trip down. It's now one of my favorite places. The drinks are sooo good, being able to see the water is wonderful, always a good breeze and the fish and chips are awesome! I wish I was there right now!
