Overnight in San Juan

Because of an American Airlines schedule change I'm going to have to overnight in San Juan in May. I'm looking for recommendations for a decent accomodation, not too expensive but still nice for one night on May 15th. I don't think I want to go in to Old San Juan. We'll get to SJU at 1PM and leave on the noon flight. I might be nice to be on the beach in a safe area not too far from the airport. Any ideas?

It may a bit pricy, but the Condado Plaza is an excellent hotel right on the water. There's a small beach on the east side. It's an easy 15 min drive (taxi) from the airport.

A few years ago, AA put us up at the Condada when they cancelled our flight from SJU to STT due to weather.

The area where the Condado is, Isla verde, has a number of hotels, from the swanky Condado and El San Juan, to some reasonably priced small private properties that are within a block or so of the beach. I used to have some of them bookmarked, but you can probably do a Google search of Isla Verde San Juan and find up to date information.

Diana, if you arrive at 1pm there are probably 4 more flights that day that go to STT so why are you having to overnight?

It's actually on the return that I have to overnight in SJU. I had a nice schedule when I booked my tickets back in November but now AA changed my flight out of STT to an early 8:20 AM flight and that's too early. If I don't leave STT at 8:20AM, I can't get back to Grand Rapids on the same day. Since that early flight is not going to work for me I end up needing to overnight somewhere so I decided I'd rather overnight in SJU rather than Chicago.
If I take the 12:20 flight from STT to SJU that will give me a decent amount of time to enjoy the brief overnight stay in San Juan. I'm not rushed because I don't leave from SJU until noon.
I'm looking at The Beach House Hotel in San Juan. Does anyone know anything about this hotel?

You can get some good prices usually on hotwire or by bidding on priceline if it helps. I don't know that they have that specific one you're asking about though. Any reason not to go into old San Juan? Obviously just my opinion, but I love wandering around there with the old forts, views, restaurants. Too bad AA messed you up though!

We almost did this one year and were going to stay at the Water Club. It's 5 minutes to the airport and on the beach. I just checked and their current rates start at $140/night. Here's a link to their website:

Good old American Airlines. They can never leave a good plan alone and they have another 2 months to screw this plan up so we'll see what happens. I'm looking at the Doubletree by Hilton now. Anyone know anything about this place? I haven't read any really bad review on this place and all the others I looked at had some terrible comments. Even the Condado Plaza had some bad reviews. We stayed there many years ago when we got stuck in SJU because of a flight cancellation and we thought it was fine. We had a very memorable meal at the hotel/casino that night. We still talk about how wonderful our dinner was that night it was that good.
I guess I really don't have anything against Old San Juan I just don't think we want to do any running around doing touristy stuff. We just want a decent clean hotel and a nice restaurant and pool to hang out at until our flight the next day.

I would try and priceline the InterContinental Hotel in Isla Verde. Its 5 minutes from the Airport, has a nice casino, its right next to the El San Juan and Ritz and can often times be had for a very reasonable sum from Priceline.
Check one of those bidding sites to get specific instructions on the best way to bid.

We stayed at the InterContinental Hotel in Isla Verde and it was great! Right on the beach, tropical pool area and so close to the airport!

Not to nit-pick, but we have stayed at/near the Condado Plaza Hotel and it is right next to the causeway that connects the condado area of San Juan to the Old City. If you like to gamble, it had the biggest casino in the area.
Isla Verde is right next to the area and friends have recommended the El San Juan there.

I stayed at the Conrad near the causeway last August while there on business, it's really nice, I think it's a Doubletree as I recall.....great pool, not much beach.
But, by all means, definitely plan to check out Old San Juan and the fort El Morro, it's magnificent. We lived in Germany for two years and saw tons of old castles and forts there, this place is very comparable....the closest thing to El Morro in North America is the walled city of Old Quebec. Also, Old San Juan is just lovely, outdoor cafe's, great pork dishes. We spent the day there before our flight home this past Christmas holiday after our surf vacation.....
hang tight, I'll pull up some pics......
