Hello all,

I will be traveling with a group of 7 coming to St. John in the March timeframe. Since we are renting our vehicles on St. Thomas this time, I thought we might stop at Kmart or Cost-U-Less to stock up on a few items. We ARE cooler people, bring meats, cheeses, etc. along including some snack items. Would it be worthwhile to get eggs, fruits, fresh veggies on St. Thomas - cost-wise I mean? Probably the one BIGGEST purchase during our past visits has been BEER - so - is beer cheaper on St. Thomas rather than St. John? We are typically a group of beer drinkers, thought if there was a price difference of a couple of dollars or more, we'd take the time to stop. Please feel free to offer other suggestions!

That's a tough situation if you're beer drinkers. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do what you have to do

7 people? That's alot of beer to take over to STJ on the ferry.

If you get stuck and you're at the ferry termial in Red Hook, you can always run across the street to the Marina Market. I didn't find their prices for beer too bad.

We had 12 people and we survived. I promise, you will too. I'd through some bottles of rum in there that you can pick up right at the airport.

Beer is a little cheaper at CUL. However, I prefer to get my groceries at the little KMart and the small grocery store next to it. Booze is really cheap at Kmart. Have fun!

It would be well worth the time and money to stop at Cost-U-Less for a shopping trip - beer booze and groceries - excellent prices - good selection, easy for vegetables , fruit, meats, dairy, cheese, eggs, etc. You should check the prices against your cooler goods too - you may well find them to be very close on more items than you had guessed.

Thanks so much for the feedback thus far. I'm looking forward to trying the car barge for the first time this March. We've always rented vehicles on St. John in the past and taken the "people ferry." I believe from previous posts - you "back" onto the ferry - is that correct? Any other pointers?

kklay--yes, you do back onto the barge. It was a little chaotic last Friday when we went over to STJ. The area where the cars queued up at Red Hook seemed rather small for the amount of traffic and compared to the Cruz Bay operation, it was a free for all as to whose turn it was to board. Boyson was the only carrier in operation and the round trip fare was $50.00.

Tincansailer, thanks so much for the info. What day of the week were you going over to STJ? We arrive on a Thursday, so I'm hoping the traffic isn't quite so bad/busy as the weekend!
