we havent been to STJ in 6 yrs and I have the old books and the old Natl Geo topo map. should I get the updated versions of the books/map for our upcoming trip? I know things have changed down there and Im wondering if the books and map have changed dramatically with all the island changes?

The edition I took in May was updated and even had a sticker on the inside cover with a note dating Nov. '08. I found the book accurate and well worth the few bucks on Amazon!

I purchased a copy of Off the Beaten Path a few years back and received with it a trail-bandit topo/trail map. They work nicely together. If you only want the map you may purchase it at traibandit.org. You can find both at vitraders.com

Personally I think your 6 year old copy will do just fine. If you want to check up on the things that may have changed you can check out Gerald Singers website at http://www.seestjohn.com/ You can also buy a new copy of the book there.
