On a budget - cottage, apartment, condo, campground studio?

Happy Friday everyone!

We didn't have a 2010 STJ trip in the budget this year, but after getting a modest (and unexpected) bonus at work, I'm starting to think that if I set my sights a little lower than usual, we could shoe horn in a trip around the end of June!

So here's my question: With a budget of around $900-1,300 for lodging for a week, where would you choose to stay? I've looked at small remote cottage villas, apartments, condos and campgrounds (Harmony Studios at Maho?). I would like to get the most for my money and have as many creature comforts as possible, although, for the most part, we really spend a minimal amount of time indoors (sleep, breakfast, out the door, clean up before dinner, back out for dinner & drinks, bed - repeat 7 times).

So, anybody have any recommendations, experiences, suggestions? Also, haven't been on island in June yet. How are the bugs?

Thanks!

Cruz Views! Budget friendly but with everything you need, and a nice pool.

Just Enough cottage. Google "Just Enough St John". Everything you need. Only con is stairs from driveway down to house. We'd rent it again regardless. Beautiful cottage.

How many peeps?

I also like the looks of Just Enough, and Sail View gets good reviews too.

I've also seen on 'cheap places to stay' lists:
Molly's Cottage (Chocolate Hole); Valley View (Fish Bay); and La Dolce Vita (Coral Bay.)

17th hole - Check out Serendip condos. My daughter and her BF stayed there in November and loved it. I stayed in a villa with a group of friends but did go in to look at the unit after my daughter raved about it. They're not luxury, but they're clean, comfortable and very convenient. Pretty roomy too. Each unit has a balcony facing Cruz Bay so the views are great. The BF took some amazing pictures of flowers and humming birds just off the deck of their unit. They've been running some discounts this year too. My daughter stayed in a one bedroom unit for $750 for the entire week. They got a welcome basket with a bottle of rum, munchies and fruit. Sure beats sleeping in a tent!! You can use the money you save on the rental to get a car so you can hit all the beaches.

It would just be the two of us. So far I like all the suggestions! Thanks guys! I love this forum!

I'm planning on surprising my wife on Valentine's Day with this trip. We usually go around the end of April to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but this year we are going to Sedona, AZ with the whole family. So, our annual romantic ;) STJ trip was postponed until 2011. Well, one unexpected bonus and a batch of excellent suggestions for a cheap place to stay later - and we're back on!

Ticker soon come!

Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming!

What a wonderful surprise for your wife !! How very sweet. It's what us women like to hear about.

We're renting Just Enough this April and from all the pics and amenities,it looks to be really great, nothing fancy,no pools or hot tubs or A/C (but have been told at that time of year & where it's located won't really need the a/c). We wanted quiet, away from the crowds and comfy. Catherine the mgr is terrfic to work with and so very friendly & accomodating, which is a big plus in our book.

Good luck in your search and enjoy the surprise when you give it.

You may also want to consider GrandeBay or something similar (condo) in Cruz Bay as you can get away with renting a jeep for 1/2 week vs the full week...$$ saver there. We are going in a month and the rate is $200/nt for a studio. Would think off-season would be even better. As much as I love having a jeep all week, it's a nice way to save some $ w/o major sacrifice.
