Thanks for all the help already, I love this forum and I'll be sure to write a trip report when I get back!

Need some more advise:

1) For the folks who've traveled from STT to STJ, what's the best route to take to get to the Red Hook ferry from the Airport?
a) Go 38 all the way (Northern route along Smith Bay Road)
b) Go 38 to 32 (Turpentine Run)
c) go 30 to 32 (Southern route using Frenchman's Bay and Bavoni Rd)


2) What types of terrain are we going to run into when hiking to the beaches? I'm wondering what type of shoes we need to bring, are flip flops sufficient or do we need something more substantial?

3) I understand parking in Cruz Bay can be difficult, any hints on where to park when we come into town for drinks and dining (I'm renting a jeep on STT so parking in a rental lot isn't an option)

Any other hints or advise is greatly appreciated!!

Cool, I'm glad folks are getting some use out of the web site. At the risk of more narcissism, here's some more opinions.

On shoeware, I stopped bringing anything other than Tevas years ago. The only terrain where I need hiking boots are areas that are pretty hard core. Rams Head has cactus if you stray off the path. Water shoes are good for some beaches. I use scuba style swim fins with booties and they do very nicely. This works for me and the kids. My parents prefer having some walking shoes as well.

Parking in Cruz Bay is a pain in. If you are in Mongoose Junction they have parking. Also, across the street from Mongoose are some spots. There are also some spots on the street back by Gallows Point. There's a parking lot behind Tamarind Court that is accessible by a dirt road by the laundry. I have not used any of the for-pay lots.

If you're new to the island (my guess) try driving all of the roads and getting the lay of the land. It's fun to head back to Fish Bay, Lameshur Bay, East End and Bordeaux Mountain Road (not all the way!).

I like to wear my swim shoes when walking to the beach, I like having my toes covered, don't want to mess the beach toes paint job! My brother in law had these great shoes similar to Teva's but with a covered toe called Keens. Something my husband wished he had. Bro hiked all over St John in them.

There is a pay lot place across from Wharfside Village called Slimmans. We park at the US customs lot or we would go park at Mongoose or Lumberyard if we are shopping or dining there. There is public parking by the Tennis courts too. We never found parking to be a big issue in January.

My hint is to hit the smoothie stand on Centerline Rd and have a Mango smoothie with Meyers Rum for me :wink
