Avatar (the movie)

Have you seen this film? Finally saw it in 3D in a theater with really good dolby digital surround sound. It is visually stunning, and for sci-fi, the story is simple and characters are engaging enough to keep things moving (when you think about it, the story line is similar in concept to Dances With Wolves). The 3D really draws you into the virtual world of Pandora without being distracting. And, stuff blows up real good. One of those movies you have to see in the theater. The trailers and commercials do not do it justice.

We tried to go last Saturday night, but it was sold out almost an hour before it started.

Will try again in a few weeks.

Speaking of trailers, they showed a couple of 3D trailers before Avatar: Shrek (eh - a novelty) and, Alice in Wonderland. This is a Disney produced Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp (who else), that, as you can well imagine looks pretty insane in a good, Tim Burton/trippy kind of way. I'm sure if this came out back when I was in college, a bunch of us would get "fired up" and go see that. :D

I've been looking forward to Alice In Wonderland since last year! Talk about "trippy"!! Love the Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter combo! Great formula for a good movie!

Just saw previews for The Wolfman on TV last night... gotta see that one too!

JMQ-- funny that you brought up the "Dances with Wolves" similarity.

I'm still trying to get out to see this movie but when I was researching whether or not to see it in 3D or standard I came across an article about the making of the film and the scuttlebut around hollywood surrounding the making of the movie.

Critics of the film were calling it "Dances with Smurfs" for a variety of reasons.

Here's a link to that article and why Cameron may run away with an Oscar for his big risk:

Gromit – thanks for the link. You have to see it in 3D. You forget you have the glasses on after about 4 minutes.
Funny about the Smurf reference too. I dragged my wife to Avatar – she said “why do I want to see a movie about blue people?”
But the first word out of her mouth after the movie was “awesome” – a word she does not use frequently. If she didn’t like it I knew I would have to give in to seeing some sappy romantic comedy in the future. :)

Cameron has usually been able to combine great effects (visuals AND sound) with a good story.
T2 and True Lies were among the first DVDs I bought after I installed my Dolby surround sound system. Gives the subwoofer a good workout!

Haven't seen avatar (though hubs did and LOVED it) and I am sorry to hijack, but another great movie out now is the Book of Eli. Not typically my type of movie either, but I have a Denzel Rule. If he's in it I see it. I didn't regret it at all.
