Trip Report 4/23 – 5/3/09, Part 2
Day 2 – Friday, 4/24
Awoke to a glorious day here at Mango Bay on Virgin Gorda. Great sleep. Did not need A/C – though both fans & A/C were available in both the bedroom & living rooms.
We headed right out to this amazing view.

Enjoyed a simple breakfast of toast, peanut butter and coffee. How lucky we were to have snagged this gorgeous table. Nothing like gazing at the islands in the distant & watching pelicans dive for their breakfast.
Even though we were thrilled to carve out a 3 night stay in Virgin Gorda, we realized that we would really just have 2 ½ days to enjoy the island. We decided to devote Day #1 primarily to enjoying the lovely place that we had chosen to stay at & to enjoy the lovely Caribbean waters that we had waited so long to enjoy, once again. Today would not be a day for running all over the place. Our Day #2 would be devoted to exploring “off resort” sites that we had picked as MUST sees.
After our simple breakfast, we grabbed a kayak & headed to Savannah Bay, which was right around the point to the left of where we were staying. We had originally planned to each get our own kayaks, But, another guest was looking to go out by herself, so we let her have one of ours & we took the tandem kayak.
Don’t know if any other couples out there can relate – but, my husband & I truly love each other. But… put us in a canoe or kayak together & FORGET IT. There is NO WAY we are ever, ever in sync! You don’t face each other – so, it is hard to communicate without yelling. Our stroke is never the same. It is just a mess. That aside – we had a lovely trip!!
It actually got quite choppy on the way over and also on the way back. But, what an amazing beach! Absolutely stunning! We shared the beach with just one other couple for a few minutes. The softest sand you could ever imagine! And as clear, if not more, than Trunk. The soft sand & clear, clear water went out forever! Absolutely gorgeous.

As we kayaked back to Mango Bay - we took this shot of Mango from the water.

Headed back to our beach. Swam a bit. Chilled on the lounge chairs. That is probably the only complaint that I could find regarding Mango Bay Resort. There could have been more lounge chairs & also many of the slats were in need of repair. That aside – the view from the beach is spectacular. Beautiful sandy beach, great for swimming. Also, the complimentary kayaks & swim floats were nice amenities.
We then got the snorkel gear on & headed out. Actually quite impressed with what we saw. Very nice coral, nice variety of fish including stoplight parrotfish, foureye butterflyfish, gray angelfish and blue tang. One of the other guests pointed out a school of squid. We actually got off a couple of pretty nice shots.

At lunchtime, we headed to the Top of the Baths. Again, perfect setting. All reviews were spot on. Cute restaurant surrounded by beautiful nature splendor. Lovely boulders & beautiful blue sea. Funny to see a little pool where anyone can take a little dip, if desired. Food-wise, we both ordered the coconut crusted fried chicken breast. Tasted even better than it sounded! BBC & Painkiller to set the mood – we were good-to-go. Cute little shop for purchasing postcards and souvenirs. Got caught in a heavy downtown - but, no worries!

Back to Mango for a little more chillin’ on our beach. We got cleaned up & headed up to the North Sound. Gino suggested a fun trip to Saba Rock for a drink. You just head up to Leverick Bay Marina. Let Saba know when you will arrive there & they send a little launch over to pick you up. Just a cute little adventure. Roads to the North Sound start reminding one of the roads past Coral Bay to Vie’s. (Not quite as bad, though). Not terribly well marked roads – so, easy to make a wrong turn or two. But, no biggie.
Thought that this road shot was kind of cool.

Our little ferry ride to Saba was fun. The restaurant was cute with a great atmosphere – painkillers very good. Tons of boats moored near the restaurant. Always fun checking out all the different styles of boats. After enjoying the surroundings for awhile, it is easy enough when ready to head back to the mainland – just grab the ferry back. Oh – as we were enjoying our drinks “Sitting on the dock of the bay” by Otis Redding came on. It sounded SOOO GOOD!! Do you ever have those moments in life when you hear a song & it is just “IT”? This was one of those moments.

Our trip to the North Shore was primarily to go to Leverick Bay Resort to have the BBQ buffet & watch the Mocko Jumbie show. Disappointed in both. Food wasn’t that great & the show was not as good as the one we saw on Tortola a couple of years ago at the Trellis Bay Full Moon Party. If you are ever lucky enough to be on Tortola during a Full Moon DO NOT MISS that event. Truly spectacular with beautifully sculpted pieces of art that they set ablaze at dusk at the water’s edge. They are actually referred to as "fireballs". The Mocko Jumbie entertainment - as well as the music was great. Just a fantastic time. Only thing that was kind of cute at Leverick was that there was a Mocko Jumbie little boy who could not have been more than 10 years old – so, that was kind of neat. All in all though – kind of a waste.
Back “home” to crash. Absolutely lovely first full day on vacation. SO glad that we picked Mango Bay resort for this short stay.
