And the duty free liquor store inside the airport terminal had some decent deals.

We saw people getting theirs compensated in Houston. That was after the underwear bomber and also coming from Mexico. I was really kind of shocked. A lot of people were complaining. I would assume that they could have gone back and checked it but I assume that all of us were scurrying to make our connecting flight and time was a luxury they couldn't afford.

I mentioned this before (on tripadvisor) and they jumped all over me saying that we haven't been able to carry on boxed booze since 9-11. Am I confused??

If you buy them before security you have to check them after it you can carry them on

Returning from Mexico thru Miami one goes thru immigration and customs, picks up all luggage and then goes thru security if flying elsewhere. Duty Free carry-ons are permitted on the plane from Mexico, but all liquids have to be placed in checked baggage except for the usual 3oz sizes in the ziplock before security. We are usually traveling American Airlines thru Miami when traveling to Mexico, and plenty of time needs to be allowed between the international and domestic flights... much walking between terminals in Miami too.
These delays and annoyances would not occur coming from St Thomas.

I think you did very well with your booze flight, waterguy!

If you are coming out of STT you clear customs there so no need to go through security again that is why you can carry on from there

That is the answer I was looking for. I just couldn't figure out why they could carry them on in Cancun but could not carry them on from Houston. So, they should have known or been told that they would be able to carry them on the connecting flight (second security).
