Comcast users

I have a question for Comcast users. My modem has this nasty habit of disconnecting (requiring a hard reset of both the modem and wireless router i.e. unplugging and plugging back in) whenever I view a very picture intense post. Like Vicki and grommt’s sailing adventure. I normally have to wait to get to work before I can read those posts in their entirety. I've had Comcast, to the house a couple of times. I know one of my problems relates to our underground utilities they were installed in the 80s without proper distance between the power lines and telephone and cable lines. Streaming videos from Netflix on my sons Xbox works fine, my VPN connection to work as no problem only picture intense screens (same issue with Face book) or using Google maps however, and this problem is intermittent.
Does anyone else have the same problem and if so, any solutions.

I do not have this problem.

I sounds like it could be any number of things. Do you clean out your browser history every once in a while? It could be the modem. It could be you need more RAM.

This is funny that you posted this tonight. This may or may not help, but I went through the ringer with my Comcast modem earlier today.

Long story short, my modem has a battery back-up. So, everytime over the past few years that I *thought* I was resetting the modem and cycling power, I was not because the batter back-up would keep supplying power. They put this battery in to protect against loss of power, etc.

I took the battery completely out today, which on my modem, is found in a compartment on the bottom.

This may or may not help, but my brother in law, who runs the IT dept for Norton was walking me through some things on the phone today, and when I mentioned to him that the modem had a battery (as I had just discovered), he said he had never seen that before.

Anywho, just my .02.

A battery in a modem??? I have not heard of that either. That would keep you from doing a reset. It also would keep you from getting the updated speed settings.

Shoemak38,
We were having similar problems once with pictures..lag..having to re-set modem and or the router.
(Island Girls computer is on the main line with the router and modem . She has an H.P. that is about 5 yrs old . Mine is also an H.P., only 1 yr old , and i'm on the wireless Linksys internal PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster.) Anyway , the power supply went out on I.Gs computer...it was pushing only 250watts...I bought a 400watt power supply from Best Buy for about $50 and installed it myself (it's pretty easy to install)and she has not had any real problems since . My computer on the other hand was still experiencing some lag and graphic's problems especially with the type of on-line games that i was playing . I told one of my co-workers about the problem i was having and he told me that even though my H.P. was only 1yr old and had all of the latest features, i should consider increasing the power supply and get at least a 1gig graphics card . Back to Best Buy ! $130 later ! Problem solved ! No more lost connections..no lag..excellent graphics .Found out my H.P. only came with a 250watt power supply(I should have known) and a built-in Invidea graphics card . Your power supply CAN make a difference.

FYI, the Netflix app on the Xbox does a lot of buffering and has very good transmission error handling, so deals with bad connections very nicely. The one on our Tivo HD is not as well behaved. Just because the Xbox is behaving with Netflix doesn't mean your line is okay.

If you're comfortable looking at diagnostics check out this resource - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h. ... ml#sbdiags

Check your particular model for bit error rates. There is some discussion of checking signal levels as well.

Bottom line, it's your Cable line, electrical, modem or a combination. I'd do a service call if it's worth the price to solve the problem. Don't let the tech leave until the problem is resolved or escalated.

Cheers, RickG

I know the line from the road to my home needs replacing switched to Direct TV to solve my HD issues. To replace underground wire they would need to cut across my driveway, or they run over ground and I would have to go back and cover wire (200’). Or I read trip report at work and my daughter’s keep resetting the modem whenever they go on a photo heavy facebook page.
Thanks for the link Rick I’ll try your this weekend.

Shoemak38,
I Talked to my tec today and he told me that you will
have problems like yours if there was any kind of a splice in your line . The connection could leak your signal . That was one of the problems i had when i switched from WOW to Comcast , the installer saw a splice in my connection to my house and told me it should have been a solid line from the pole to my box.
