It happened once from SanJuan to STT. Our luggage came through on the next flight.
Has also happened in Denver, Tahiti, West Palm, Pittsburgh, and Boston; luggage was always recovered and delivered.
Good Luck to your friend.
(yeah, yeah - carry on only - blah, blah, blah)

has it ever happened ?? - I have lived here 35 years and travel off island frequently -- I actually do not expect my luggage to be on the same plane unless it is non-stop and even then it has come on the later flight.

We had lost luggage after a direct PHL to STT flight.
Bag #1 and Bag #2 arrived hours apart on the ferry.
ETA - it took 2 days

This is advice I saved from the forum a couple of years ago before our first trip. I don't know if any of these tips will still help your friend, but just in case...
Lost Luggage:
First: cross pack – split clothing so that a lost bag does not mean one person has nothing.
1. Get the name of the person at the airline baggage service desk AND the local phone number at the St. Thomas airport. US Air's 1-800 number was absolutely worthless as you cannot speak to a live operator.
2. Get the schedule of incoming flights so you have a general idea about what time you might expect a call.
3. Prior to leaving the airport, check the baggage claim areas of the other airlines. We actually found some of our luggage at a different airline. (Several pieces came down on a different flight.)
4. Have your contact number available at all times in case you need to provide it after the initial claim is filed. I called to check on our claim from downtown and was asked to provide the villa phone number, which I did not have on me at the time.

It happened to my husband on a direct flight from Philly to St. Thomas. It arrived the next evening. It came over on the car barge. We will NEVER check bags again

I hope hers arrives quicker and that she has a blast sampling all the mojitos.
Lucky her to escape this crazy cold weather.

Ditto... with some minor variations. We were flying non-stop from JFK to STT. Staying way over at Concordia, so meeting the ferry was tough. Wasted too much of our vacation time on the phone (no cell reception for me out by Salt Pond) and driving across the island and back. I now use the Osprey Porter. The best.bag.ever! Overhead bin compliant, and fits everything I need, including snorkel equipment and fins.

Just wanted to let you know that I eventually got my luggage that Monday evening. Actually, I did not hang out at Joe's Rum Hut opting instead for the Beach Bar. When I got the luggage, all of the tags had been cut off so I had no idea where the bag was coming from. The airline refused to give me an explanation as to what had happened. I still can't understand how you can lose luggage that was checked in at the same time as another person's (which made it on the plane) and you were on the tarmac for 3 hours!
