Healthy Food Geek here - has a few questions...

Hubby & I are healthy food geeks- and for the most part- eating out is rarely a problem as most restaurants (we'd consider going to) offer salads, fresh vegetables, foods made in a fairly healthy way - and staff that is usually accommodating with serving dressings & sauces on the side and substituting things here & there... That said - what restaurants - if any - have been serving whole grain (real - not just white with 10% whole grain or brown food coloring thrown in) pastas, breads & wraps lately? Again, it's not a big deal - we will even eat breads made of processed white flour now & then - but really enjoy & prefer unprocessed. Also... since we'll be eating breakfast & some lunches in our villa, which market (if any) would be more likely to offer pure peanut butter (freshly ground - or in a jar - without anything added), raw nuts (not roasted), and maybe ground flax - and other healthfood items?

Thanks guys :-)

Is Satyamuna still in business in The Marketplace? I've never been there, but they seem to have a good vegetarian reputation, so I would imagine they offer a good selection of healthy meals.

I took my own peanut butter. Laura Scudders natural/no salt. Put it in a zip lock bag in your checked luggage. :D

I think that Satyamuna has closed. However, most of the restaurants are very accommodating with offering fresh veggies/salads with dressings on the side/fresh grilled fish etc...you should have no problem finding healthy options. Now, for pastas and breads, that's a whole different issue. I've never seen any true whole grain options in restaurants. You might find true whole grain pastas and breads in stores but they will probably be rather pricey. I'd bring my own. Starfish carries (sometimes) a wonderful fresh sourdough bread though which is just about as healthy as a whole grain bread.

We eat the way you eat, when we are being "good." LOL.

As you might imagine, I have spent some time perusing the food items for sale at the various St. John markets.

For the types of food you specifically mention, you are going to have to bring it with you. I definitely don't remember seeing flaxseed, for example. That makes sense when you think about it--it's really perishable. There is no fresh ground peanut butter, or raw nuts. There is "multigrain" baguette at Starfish, but it tastes really light--not like the kind of wholegrain bread you are thinking of. And yes, Satyamuna is closed.

Hello, fellow cooler person. :D

Baked in the Sun and Deli Grotto both make really good whole grain breads, and they offer great sandwiches. Dolphin market has the largest selection of organic products--some at truly shocking prices--and usually they have natural peanut butters, whole grain pastas, raw nuts, etc. Their produce is usually the best, and best priced, in town. Can't think of any dinner restaurants with whole grain choices.

Thanks for the info everyone :-)

We don't plan on making pasta - just wanted to know if any specific restaurants offer it as an alternative (lots are starting to - even some Chinese restaurants are offering brown rice in lieu of white).

Glad to know we don't need to lug a jar of peanut butter on the plane...don't need freshly ground - just don't want one with anything in it other than peanuts... We'll be bringing our own ground flax & raw nuts though :-)
