Is it worth taking the car over to st. john? or should we just take a taxi to the beach? We will be under no time line if we take the people ferry

depends on what you want to do or how much you want to spend. Do you just want to hang around Cruz Bay and shop/eat/look around? Do you want to go to maybe one or two beaches then have a nice dinner after? Do you want to sleep in later and stay later? Are you wanting a taste of St. John night life (not that there is much and the last people ferry is at 11)? If you answer yes to these questions- then just take the people ferry over and enjoy your day.
How many are in your group? If there is just a couple than factor in the cost of the car barge. It will cost you $50 round trip on the car barge and you can get a lot of taxi rides for two people to the beach for that. But, if you have a group of 4 or more than the car barge will save you money.
If you want to really tour the island than you need a car. If you are worried about not having enough time- consider renting a car for the day on St. John. Friends of mine rented for just one day- they came early and saw lots of the island. They dropped the car off in town and stayed for a great dinner and a taste of the night life. It was the best of both worlds.
Enjoy!
