What is the best route to take from Cyril E. King Airport to Red Hook car ferries?

There are many different ways of doing this. Many locals feel that the best option is to avoid town altogether by going up the mountain, but it is very hard to give directions for up there, given the number of roads and turns you need to make.
The simplest thing is to go through town and bear right at Mandela Circle, just past Yacht Haven, and follow the south shore all the way. There will be one more right turn at the "T" intersection at Nadir, by the bridge to nowhere.

Not the quickest way but the directions I always post....................

OK buckle up and we are on our way :)

1) Exit the airport and take a right at the traffic light.

2) Continue on that road past downtown CA, past Havensite, past the cruise ships. The road will then start to climb up.

3) You will come to a stop sign - bear left. Now about this stop sign....you will notice alot of people don't see it and don't stop as it is behind a tree/bush (unless it has been recently trimmed) If you miss it and don't turn/bear left you will end up at the Marriott hotel so just turn around go back to the stop sign (much easier to spot from this direction) and turn right.

4) Stay on this road and eventually you will come to another stop sign at a T interstection. Turn right. The "bridge to nowhere" will be on your right at that T intersection

5) Stay on that road and you will arrive in Red Hook and the car ferry will be on your right

Travel time approx 30-35 mins on a "normal" traffic day, but if there are alot of cruise ships in, and you are trying to get through downtown CA between 4pm and 5:30pm (they are all returning to the ships and people are also leaving from work) it could take alot longer.

There are a few other routes to take but I have found this to be the easiest for first timers

Hope this helps everyone

What Pia said...

and then there's the mountain trek...that many of the taxi's take...and the view at the top is breathless.

Ha ha! I've gone straight at that first stop sign.

That would make an interesting poll... "Have you missed that first left turn out of Havensight?"

We're going to have to try that southern route past Havensight one of these days. In all of the times we have headed east from the airport we have always taken Weymouth Rhymer Hwy 38 east past the Cost-U-Less and Tutu Mall (Plaza Extra & K-Mart). Route 38 then becomes the Smith Bay Road and winds past the turn into Coki and Coral World and then the Wyndham, Sapphire Beach, and then into Red Hook where it's a left turn to the ferries. We're usually stopping to shop so this route probably works better for that.

I know the taxis like this route and it's very pretty up there but we've stayed up in Caret Bay and taken 33 up from Nisky Center/Crown Bay and over the mountains. Lots of twists and turns, easy to get lost up there before you hook up with 42 heading south to meet 38 again.
