Car/Jeep rental questions

Hi! New to this wonderful forum. I'm sure this question has been answered here before, but I can't find it! My husband and I will be visiting St. John Feb 1-5. We are very tight on funds. We will be staying at the Cinnamon Bay Campground (in their tents).
Question: It seems everyone rents Jeeps, which are kind of expensive. Would we be OK with a regular car? It seems it doesn't rain too much in Feb. (we hope!). Also, we are planning to rent in STT and car ferry to STJ as it seems the most convenient.
Any thoughts most welcome! THANKS!

Do ya really save that much renting a car on STT compared to a jeep? If so a car will work on the main roads unless it rains. One curve after Cinnamon comes to mind. If your really tight on funds you could hitchhike to the Northshore beaches. It's not that uncommon for people to hitch on St John. Have fun whatever ya decide.

If you are really tight on funds I wouldn't rule out the taxi option. Unless you want to do a lot of exploring, you could taxi to most of the beaches and into town.
Just an idea. I am a big fan of jeep rental but since you don't have long trip and you are trying to save money that might work very well for you. There are lots of taxis that hang out at Cinnamon, at least during the day.
Anyone else have an opinion on that? You might even make a few friends at the campground and be able to bum a ride.
I guess it depends if you like staying in one place for the day or if you want to go all over the place.
I haven't camped on St. John before so maybe someone who has can fill you in on that.

I did notice a lot more cars on island this year especially out in Coral Bay. So, I guess it's doable.
I don't know what the car barge costs, but be sure you figure the car ferry vs. people ferry into your costs.
For short trip though, I would think a couple of taxi's would be doable. Spending most of your time right at Cinnamon would still be a great trip. One day waaay left, one day right - good snorkeling and a couple of trails.
Enjoy!

Wow, thanks for all the quick relies! I checked into the car vs. people ferry and it's actually about the same price (figuring two people with two peices of luggage) since the car ferry is just one price ($21 each way for car/people/luggage). It seems a Jeep will cost us about $80 more, minimum...but we might just go for it, seems like a Jeep is so much fun!
We will definately do a car or Jeep rather than taxis as we like to explore!
Any other thoughts would be very appreciated! Especially whether a car is doable...
THANKS!

$80 bucks no question go the jeep if ya like to explore. Theres so many cool places ya just can't take a car. It will be the best $80 ya spend. Bring extra food to justify it if your really on a budget.I figure we save at least $200 doing that.

HI WELCOME
AHHHH, Remember it so well
Our first stay on STJ...Reserved ahead
with budget at airport. Got there and WOW
they had issued us a LITTLE Chevy Neon !!!
Tineeeeeee little car. But, Believe it or
not we actually made it everywhere we wanted
to go. Even up that "Gift Hill Road"!
It was a real adventure! We even made it
all the way out to the very end of East End.
Did think we might have to push it up the hills
though...kind of embarassing when the
goats are passing you by and laughing
Would we do it again...rather not.
But it did work that time!!
