Going to be on St. John for Christmas and New Years. When we were there the end of October-beginning of November Chateau Bordeaux was supposed to open mid-November. Does anyone know if it is open yet, or soon will be?

Chateau Bordeaux closed and then re-opened in the past few weeks with a new owner and staff. We have not yet been there and have not seen a menu, but there has been activity and diners have been spotted on the deck overlooking Coral Bay and Bordeaux.

Cruz Bay isn't the only spot on the island that's expanding its dinner options. Since it closed its doors last winter, Chateau Bordeaux, which commands a peerless view up the Sir Francis Drake Channel, has been sorely missed. Once belonging to the St. John Restaurants fold, Chateau Bordeaux is now being reopened by Lorelei Monsanto, daughter of Wilma Monsanto, who first opened the restaurant over 30 years ago. Joining Lorelei will be chef Matt Crafts, who spent two and a half years in Chateau Bordeaux's kitchen back in ‘05-‘07, and now that he's back, he and Monsanto are working on a Caribbean-French menu.

"I want to include as much of the local produce as I can," Crafts says. The menu will also include a fish of the day, freshly caught by local fisherman. "I want to get across the idea of what the Caribbean has to offer," he says.

The dinner menu - all $30 or under, says Monsanto - will be complemented by a wine list that Crafts says will be more "worldly" than its previous incarnation. The restaurant will also be open for lunch on the deck - with burgers and fish sandwiches, as well as to-go options for an easy stop, en route to the beach. Sunday brunch is also in the works, though it probably won't start right off the bat.

Caribbean cuisine ("with a flair," says Monsanto) isn't the only thing Chateau Bordeaux has to offer, though. Both Crafts and Monsanto stressed that the ambiance and atmosphere of the restaurant are another major selling point, and something that will bring people out, despite the drive, again and again. "We know it's a bit farther out," says Monsanto, but you can "enjoy the moon as it's rising, the shimmering lights in the distance - it makes you feel like you're on a tropical island, naturally."

"Once people come up here," says Crafts, "they'll notice it's worth the drive."

Chateau Bordeaux will also be opening at the very beginning of November, for lunch and dinner, five days a week (tentatively Wed-Sun, but call for details. 340-776-6611).

That's great news. We enjoyed Chateau Bordeaux so much in '05, 6, and 7, and not so much in '08. We stay nearby, and if the owner is reading this - we promise at least two lunches and dinners if you'll stay open end of October/beginning of November!
