A little worried about New Years

I booked my trip for STJ for December 29th - January 4th. I started calling for rental cars and there are absolutely none available on the island. That's not my main concern. My Main concern is that if no cars are available, that must mean the island will be busier than usual, which I totally expected. But how busy is it? Are the beaches crowded?

Sort of depends.....if there is a north swell/wind then you can be guaranteed a HUGE crowd at salt pond.
Maho is usually pretty crowded--Francis handles the crowds ok
Trunk fugedaboutit--esp after you look at the cruise ship schedule--but you can usually find an alone spot off the beaten track...

Thanks Loria. Did I read that you're going to be there on New Year's also?

Have you thought about renting on St Thomas? I just checked Budget and they have availability for the week. We'll be there 12/29 - 01/05 and are renting through Budget for the week.

I think St. Thomas will be my only option. Do you know what time the last car barge leaves St. Thomas for St. John?
So you're going there for New Year's as well? Im going with my girlfirend. Perhaps we should meet up. I'll likely be at the Beach Bar almost every night!

I guess I don't know about these full moon parties. Sounds fun just by the title though!

Looks like every hour right now, see this post

Hope more than one barge is running by then.
We are staying at Gallows so the Beach bar is just a stumble down the street, sure we'll be there quite often.

Russ, I really don't think you will have any problems with crowds. We have been there over New Years and we did not ever feel like there was too much of a crowd. We did a little planning: knowing when the busiest days are by knowing the cruise ships schedule; going early to trunk . . . etc.
Let me know when you get back if I am wrong.

Thanks Gina. I didn't check the cruise schedule but I'll let you know how it goes.

I was in a similar situation and found nothing on STJ so called every agency on STT except for Budget (lots of bad ratings) and Hertz (don't allow cars to go to STJ). Finally found something and compiled the following list and numbers to help myself keep track of things (Ratings on this forum are all over the place and while some agencies consistently get good ratings, I was not in a position to be too picky):
Dependable Car Rental 800-522-3076
Amalie Car Rental 888 568 3535 or 340 774 0688
Thrifty 340-776-1500
Dollar 340-776-1500
Avis 340-774-1468
Zip car rental 340-715-1501
Discount Car Rental 877-478-2833
