digital camera questions

I have decided to buy the Canon D10. This will be our first digital camera. I have alot to learn before our trip. Is there some type of device like a flash drive that can read and store a memory card? We will be on STJ for 2 weeks and want to take loads of pic's and am not sure if I should purchase a bunch of memory cards or even how many I would need or if there is a device like above. We are staying at Cinnamon so bringing a laptop is out of the question. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I always just bring a bunch of memory cards. They are not expensive or bulky, and that way you can switch out the card and store the ones with pictures on it in a safe place--just in case you lose your camera...you won't lose all your pictures. I switch out the card about every other day.

The D10 camera looks like a good camera. There was a trip report recently that used the D10--I will take a look and come back and tell you whose it was (maybe you already know?)

I agree with liamsaunt to get more memory cards. It never occurred to me to change the card daily but that is good advice.

Also, take a look at this: Transcend 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card with USB 2.0 Card Reader TS8GSDHC6-S5W

Here is the link to amazon:

You will love the D10. I used mine primarily for snorkeling on my last trip, but also took it with me at night rather than toting the Rebel. It takes great pictures.

When memory cards were pricier (and the biggest were < 1gb), we had a small device that we could off load pictures and reuse the cards. Now that the cards have come down in price (even 8GB are reasonable), we just take a ton of cards.

I had 350+ pics and a few videos on an 8GB card and had room for plenty more.

xoxo I understood the reader to tranfer/translate the info on a sdhc card to a readable format for the computer not a storage devise. Do I have this wrong?

Jayseadee can you use an 8gb card in the D10? I am still trying to figure this all out. I thought I read somewhere that not all cameras will read 8gb or higher card, but could not figure out how to tell what cameras can or can't.

Also one more question, Is it worth paying xtra for class 6 vs class 2? Does it effect the quality of the pic's? Or speed of camera? Or is this just speed of transfer from card to comp?

Thanks...

HI Joppa,

Yes, you can use 8GB cards in the D10. I have the San Disk Ultra's. Not sure if the Ultra means anything.

Can't help you with the Class; I haven't heard that before. I'll ask Don, he's the camera guru in the family.

Hi Joppa!
We bought a D10 for our last trip to St. John and loved it. We took about 2,000 pics and didn't fill one card up, in 8 days. I think that 2 cards would be plenty. They were 8 GB cards.
Sun4mysoul told me about picassaweb for editing the pics. The "I'm feeling lucky" edit worked great for our underwater pics. You can't tell by my early trip reports, cause I didn't know about it then, but my later ones were edited with this program, and it's free. Then, for posting here, I downloaded to www.tinypic.com, which made nice big pics for posting here.
Hope that helps! Enjoy! Can't wait to see your pics!

The class 6 cards are great for getting info onto your memory card when you are doing something like taking movies, without pausing to buffer, or shooting with a high speed motor drive. For snapshots with the D10 you should be OK with the more inexpensive, slower cards.

Can anyone answer this question for Joppa and I? I haven't ordered it yet but I was going to. I read a review about someone taking it on vacation and assumed that we could transfer the card to the storage device. Now I am not so sure.

Joppa, from what everyone is saying maybe we could get a few cards and not having to delete any pictures due to storage problems (been there). My camera has HD video that I plan on using so I, like Joppa, don't want to run into problems with storage.

Will the class 6 cards be ok??? Get maybe 3 of them?

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Gina I think I am going to get class 6,and some of the less expensive ones too, and probably more than 3 as I like Liamsaunt's idea of changing the cards out every other day or so.

A friend told me to write some of my contact info down and take a picture of it. If my camera is lost the info is in it for the finder to see. I wanted to share that as I thought it was great advice.

Thanks everyone...

Great idea about the contact info!!

Well, Joppa my intention was to help you but, in the end, I am going to follow your lead and buy the the class 6. Thanks!

I own two of those transcend readers. All they do is provide a slot you can put your card into, and then the reader fits into the USB port of your computer, in case you dont have a built in card reader on your computer. At that point you can transfer the information onto your computer from the card.

Ah--thank you ifloat. That helps. I appreciate that you cleared that up.

Is this the kind of thing you were looking for? Some fairly small device that you could transfer the pictures off your SD cards onto, for backup while on vacation, if you're not lugging a computer?

It's not exactly cheap, but there are probably other devices of this kind available for a better price. I just haven't looked.

Hi, I just bought the G10 for my trip last week, amazing little camera, the housing is very good, no leaks!
As for downloading, I bought a WD external hard drive. I had a card reader and then just downloaded each night. Best Buy has great deals on them. I got a 500 gig hard drive for 79.00 The hard drives are very small and easily transportable. size of bill fold.

You can PM if you have any questions about the camera. The underwater setting works good but you will need to color correct the photos when editing. Also if you are doing a sunset photo put it on the sun setting in the scene mode. Works like a charm.
