Health Insurance coverage??

My 18 year old needed a couple of shots required before he went to college. I got a bill for the full amount of the shots saying that my insurance denied coverage. I just called BCBS and they said they cover well child shots--only if the child is under 6. WTH?? Is that normal??

I guess I understand if the shot is optional but a normal immunization? What gives?

my friend just got some shots for traveling purpose and the insurance didn't cover it, she had to pay 100%, and we have good insurance. It makes no sense. If you don't get the shots and get sick, they'll cover it and the expense is 100 times more than the cost of the shots. Crazy.

I fully agree with you Mrs. Jay. I would have never guessed this is their policy. When we got the policy I did not notice that immunizations were covered for well children under 6 only. It just seems silly.

They said flu shots aren't covered--MRSJAY you are right--the insurance company will not help me prevent illness but they will cover the illness that will cost them much more. :?: :?: Where is the logic?

Thank you for the reply--I just wondered if it is normal.

More and more I am SO tempted to get catastrophic health insurance with an insanely high deductible and lower premiums. Does anyone do this? What are your thoughts?

A general rule of thumb with ANY insurance is that larger deductibles usually pay off in the long run, as long as you are not in a high risk category or have chronic conditions, can afford the deductible hit, are not living paycheck to paycheck, etc.
Its burdensome to read through all the options a couple times to understand them, but could be time well spent. You may find that some higher deductible options may even pay a higher % after you satisfy the deductible. Essentially you are choosing to self insure part of your risk. Its understandable that many are not comfortable doing that.
