Ok, I am not much of a Spa person --at all--really and truly (ok, truth in advertising, i have been known to get a pedicure now and again) BUT it is my daughters 13th birthday on christmas and she wants to do the spa thing --(last year rock climbing this year spas--oh how times have changed!) she wants to get a facial and a massage-- Is the Westin Spa any good--are there other options?
can anyone recommend a person/place?

thanks!!!!!

don't know about the Westin but you might want to check on the age for services. I have seen spas that have a minimum age and it was over 13.

Loria,
A first facial while on vacation might not be the best idea especially for a teenage girl. She might have a reaction and it could spoil everyone's vacation. I'd save that for back home.

Maybe check out a spa mani/pedi combo at the Westin. I know that I've been places that do outrageously decadent treatments like chocolate soaks etc. I am sure she can get the full on spa experience even just doing something like that.

The massage part is up to you. I'm not sure if massages for anyone under 18 is allowed a massage unless for medical or therapeutic reasons for obvious reasons and I would be shocked if it were allowed without an accompanying parent or guardian in the room.

Both of you bring up very good issues--and I cannot believe that I am so clueless as to not recognize them from the outset! I am going to chalk this one up to too much work.

I think that mani/pedi with mom is the way to go--anything else is not cool

Seriously! what was I thinking!!! (or not thinking!!!)

Haven't you learned yet? You have a "tween" which means you know nothing. :D

Kidding aside, your daughter is lucky to have a Mom who is putting so much thought into her big birthday.

Let us know how what you do. I would love to check out the spa at the Westin on our next trip.

Enjoy!

Hi there! I saw the chat about spa services for your daughter and have the perfect solution. There is a new day spa right across from the Westin that is locally owned and staffed. I am a massage therapist and esthetician for Drift Away Day Spa. As for your question about teen services- I have been working in this field for approx. 12 years and have worked on many children of all ages, down to premature infants. There are so many benefits. In your case, a happy birthday girl. :D
Both massage and facials are appropriate services for a young person. Someone had mentioned after a first facial the possibility of a spot breakout, this is true but will only be a minor possibility compared with so many other benefits. I personally love to work with young teens to educate them in how to maximize their skin health. It is so important for their self-confidence to know how to look their best.
As for your comfort with her being alone with someone you dont know, I can assure you as a spa professional and as a mother that if you go to a professional spa, they will hire professional staff memebers- wherever that may be. Drift Away does have a couples room where you and your daughter can receive your massages at the same time, which could be a very fun bonding experience as well.
Whatever you decide to do- have fun with this new phase you are entering! We'd love to see you at Drift Away.

Here is another option for you. We are having massages done at our villa. The woman's name I've spoken to is Teresa Rice and her email is stjohnvimassage@gmail.com We are having two therapist for seven people. That way, you could have your massage right next to your daughter right on your deck!
