Colombia (probably Cartagena) is one of my longer term ideas for a Caribbean destination. I have been reseaching for a while and I'm wondering if anyone has experience they can share or websites, info, etc...?

Thanks!

I can't help you, but I'm also interested in any responses that you may get. Recently, Globe Trekker on PBS aired a segment on Columbia and mentioned the Cartagena area.

I had been following a travel blog on Radio Margaritaville's website, although it's not there anymore, about a couple who retired and are now sailing the Caribbean...pretty cool. They spent some time in Cartegena and posted about it.

Old Cartagena is the sister of old San Juan, walled fortified cities built by the Spanish about the same time. The point to the west has high-rise hotels and condos built on the beach, like the Condado east of SJ. The similarities end there. Travel is hard in Columbia but there are beautiful places and people. We stayed with friends in Bogata. Go to a bullfight, see the Gold Museum, the National Museum, buy emeralds. Several days were spent in Villa de Leiva.

The hosteria del molino la mesopotamia in Villa de Leiva is spectacular. We took a bus from Bogata to San Augustin to see the carvings, statues, and ruins of earlier cultures. Then we flew from Bogota to Cartgena and spent a few days wandering the old city. Dancing at the clubs begins at 10pm and really starts rolling at midnight. Afternoon siestas are welcome relief.
