Looking into a few new hikes for next week's trip. (Sorry Boston Mike).

Can anyone compare Caneel Hill with another popular trail on STJ; like Reef Bay, Rams Head, or Johnny Horn? Would like some personal insight on terrain, difficulty, steepness, etc.

What's up Sun Hey I like to call Caneel Hill trail cardiac hill. Have done it twice, not gonna lie it's a bitch but worth it. Ya gonna sweat and take some breaks while headin for the top. Very pretty hike. Do it

We had a similar experience as Pia. We hiked and hiked, somehow ended up extremely lost and ended up walking at least an hour more than planned and probably more.

We did use the Feet Fins and Four wheel drive book. Luckily this was our first time on the island and we didn't have kids with us.

Now that we have been "around", maybe we would have recognized where we were, but I am not so sure.

I thought the hiking was moderate in difficulty-like maybe about the same as coming up from Honeymoon or Soloman to the Lind Point trail entrance, but much longer.

Basically, very do-able, but bring extra water in case you get lost-

Best info I can find is on hiking is the Trail bandidt website - not sure if this is same infamous bandit on this forum if it is sorry! Hope not becasue his map is invaluable to hikers on St. John. I have a laminated printed copy I take with me on all my hikes.

Tip: the more lines a trail crosses the steeper it is. this trail ascends to 840ft.

Even harder - Caneel Hill & Margaret Hill together. Bring porters and electrolytes.

Andys a big boy he could do it I think, not so sure he would enjoy it. I started at the bottom right by the parking lot past Moongoose went up to the lookout at the top of Caneel Hill then turned around and headed back down. Theres alot more trail than that but I didn't want any more of it and to think people run up that thing
Hey have ya ever done the Reef Bay shoreline hike if not I highly recoomend it. WAAAAAAY EASIER and a really neat hike.

Capt- I have not tried the Reef Bay Shoreline. Did you start from Parrot Bay as instructed in the Off The Beaten Path book and go from there...?

In keeping w/this topic, what are the best trails for someone w/mild but very controlled asthma? Don't have too much problems w/it anymore, but don't want to push my luck.

This might be good news for you. My daughter has mild/moderate asthma also and she does very well on St. John. In fact she says she has no asthma or allergy symptoms whatsover, and she has never needed her inhaler there. We have been quite a few times and she will often comment on how much better she feels.

At home she would need it for the type of hiking we do in St. John. We don't do the big stuff as we have a younger daughter, but frequently go about 30 minutes or so.

I don't know if it is the humidity or lack of allergens or both.
