This just in:

"...confirmed that there is no downtown ferry service until further notice. Stopped running last Thursday. One boat down for maintenance, another being inspected, etc., but did not issue any notice to the media to let people know..."

Just read this post and kinda worried...we are flying into STT around 9pm in 2 weeks and plan on taking a ferry to St. John right after the flight. I hope they start operating before then!

Szorba, you will be fine. The Red Hook Ferry runs until midnight. The downtown ferry (Charlotte Amalie) always ran less frequent.

Yes, as Brenda said you will be fine. The last ferry from CA was at 5:30pm so your only option would have been Red Hook anyway - last one at midnight but you will probably make the 11pm anyway :)

So NO downtown ferry AT all?
Will it start up again for season in Dec or is this an unknown?
Since we are coming Nov 12 and arriving 4ish should we just shoot for the 6p Red Hook?

Oh I'm so glad there's a forum. I will be sure to get a drink before getting in the taxi now.

The ferry has been claiming that they are loosing money on this route during slow season, so it is my guess that they are in no hurry to get it back up and running. They even asked to close down the service all together and just run out of Red Hook. They were turned down and instead just went to a new schedule of service at half of what it was for downtown St. Thomas. Break out the popcorn. This may take a while.

Perfect, thanks everyone!Looks like we will be taking the Red Hook ferry....a little farther than the CA but at least we will get there. Its gonna be a long day of traveling but soooo worth it. Can't wait!! :D

Yes, Red Hook is farther but really they both take close to the same amount of time with CA having a longer ferry ride and RH a shorter ride and vice versa with the taxi time. For example, we arrive at 4:30pm. If things go well and it is running, we could feasably take the 5:30 ferry from CA and arrive on STJ around 6:10ish. Or, we could take the 6:00 ferry from RH and arrive about 6:20. At least RH has a terminal and you can have a much needed adult beverage if you have to wait at all.

The VI Daily News article today states that the 2 ferry companies that provide the downtown ferry service do not know when it will resume. The telephone numbers for these 2 companies were given.
