Hey guys
I'm a newbie and wondering what the differences are between the Cruz Bay side and the Coral Bay side as far as weather. Some where I read the the Coral Bay side is pretty windy. Is this true? I know all the differences as far as Cruz Bay is where you dock with the ferry, its a larger town, etc. I'm just wondering if there are any big differences other then that. Also, how far is it from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay.

I thought the distance was ' Eight Tuff Miles ' !

The weather may be different, it may not. By the time you try to "outrun" it, it may move.

One tip I got once that has somehow always proved to be true (for me) is that if it's cloudy at Maho, it's sunny at Honeymoon, and if it's cloudy at Honeymoon, it's sunny at Maho. I'm sure there are both zero and extremely scientific explanations for this. Neither seems to matter once you're on the beach.

The trade-winds blow from the east or southest. Cruz Bay is in the lee of the island most of the time which means it is less breezy. Personally, I notice as much as a ten degree apparent difference in temperature due to this at certain times. But ultimately, the difference that matters is that Coral Bay is more laid back, quiet and peaceful then Cruz Bay. There is plenty to do on the Coral Bay side, great restaurants and bars and access to water sports and boating and ultimately, it is the same distance to the beaches on the North Shore and closer to the places out south and to the east.

Cruz Bay is an actual recognizable 'town' whereas Coral Bay is not really a 'town' but rather a community if that makes sense.

In Cruz Bay you'll find lots of people and traffic and restaurants and shops hussle and bussle. In Coral Bay you'll find more goats and sheep and donkeys than people. There will be a restaurant/bar here and then a school and then another restaurant/bar and then down the way there's a gas station and a little grocery store and then further down the road another restaurant/bar and across the road another restaurant/bar and another small grocery store and a few shops. An then further down the road........repeat the above. You get the picture.....Coral Bay is spread out and quieter and more lay back.

Can you guess which one I prefer?

Cruz Bay chickens, people, cars, small town traffic, shops, restaurants, real grocery stores, not much parking available, small town bustle.

Coral Bay sheep, goats, donkeys, some people, some cars, plenty of parking, a few shops, small grocery stores, a decent amount of restaurants, quiet, calmer.

Cruz Bay=Tails Up

Coral Bay=Tails Down

Cruz Bay...Beach Bar; things to do; places with views.

Coral Bay...dusty, dry with a burger joint that smells like urinal cakes

Wow Mr. Marcia, I guess you were only at Skinny's and did not really like it. Not for everyone. I actually think Coral Bay has better views, but that is just me. I like to look at the sparsly inhabited or uninhabited islands to the east more then the overpopulated one to the west.

No, we've been to places other than Skinny's. Let's see, Sweet Plantains; Aqua Bistro; Shipwreck Landing; Island Blues; Miss Lucy's...I think that's it.

Obviously it's a coke vs. pepsi, miller vs. bud type discussion...it's all about personal preference. We like to stay along the South Shore, but would much rather frequent Cruz Bay for dinner, etc. than Coral Bay.

And, you are right about my reaction to Skinny's. I've never understood the attraction. It is a somewhat smelly, fly infested place with a view that brings to mind a junk yard. I'd much rather have a burger at the Beach Bar and look out over the water. Or, better yet, have my burger while sitting on the beach. That's just me.

I'm with wonderlost. Cruz Bay is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to stay there.
Got to be glad that we don't all like the same thing, would get awfully damn crowded!

Cruz Bay=traffic, noise, no parking, speed bumps, The Marketplace Shopping Center, ferrys, overpriced restaurants, Mongoose Junction Shopping Center, St. Thomas views and close together.

Coral Bay=no traffic, quiet, parking, goats, Cocolobo Shopping Center, moderately priced restaurants, big BVI views and spread out.

It all depends what you are looking for.
