Hey all,

Hubby and I are celebrating our 5th anniversary this year and so decided to spend a few nights at Mohegan Sun Casino & Hotel!

We are not highrollers by any means but we stayed at Mohegan last year and they've been sending us special room rates every month. We got $149/night rate for Monday & Tuesday night (regular is @ $220).

If you are not familiar with Mohegan, it is one of those casinos on a reservation deals. The creators of Mohegan wanted to relate the casino & hotel to the tribe and tribal lands and the natural world. The materials used in the build and decor of the hotel include natural stone, birch bark, shells, water, water falls, etc. The casinos are named The Wind, the Earth and The Sky and the decor of the hotel reflects these themes using the natural elements, mosaics, hanging sculptures etc. It is a really stunningly beautiful place. And that's why I like it. The colors, the themes, the 50 foot waterfall, the water wall- I like being surrounded by these elements. Honestly, I don't really groove on gambling.

The rooms are larger than standard, clean, classy, fresh and the beds are awesomely comfy. The bathroom is large and there is a sliding door creating a toilet closet. The views are of the river next to the hotel and the rolling green hills of Connecticut. Very calming & beautiful.

While hubby played Blackjack, I gave money to the slot machines and got spa treatments!

First though- the FOOD!

Michael Jordan's Steakhouse- good. Very good. Both of our steaks were cooked prefectly. The garlic bread with blue cheese dipping sauce was yummy. I'm not a fan of blue cheese but the "fondue" was mellowed out & smooth. mashed potatoes were fresh. Zucchini & Tomatoe side was clean and bright and a good side if you don't want to be overstuffed and pass out.

MJ's Cafe- Tv's, tv's, tv's, sports, sports, sports. And really good food. I got the lobster club sandwich. Need I say more? Hubby got a steak (yes that would be 2 steaks in a row), a bit over cooked but still tasted good. Fries are hand cut, skin-on, perfectly seasoned. Plum martini was WAY too sweet. Captain & Coke was STRONG.

Frank Pepe's pizza- serioulsly damn good pizza! I think it's the simplicity. You can actually taste the sauce and it's fresh and tomatoey. FYI- it's oily. Growing up in Massachusetts there are 2 types of pizza- Greek (thicker crust, oily) & Italian (thin crust, dryer). I calld Frank Pepe's more Greek in style but very italian in taste. Does that make sense?

Tuscany breakfast- Todd English's Tuscany is situated around the 50 foot waterfall- very enchanting. they recently started serving breakfast here and- wow- what a treat! Coffee- strong, not bitter, deep. Eggs- over easy- hubby was surprised at how GOOD the eggs were- fresh. Clean oil on the grill? Organic eggs? Who knows. Breakfast taters- moist sliceses of new potatoe, skin on, perfectly seasoned but simple with herbs and olive oil. Ricoota pancakes with pine nuts, raisins, honeyed whip cream, fig compote- Seriously good shit!- the fig stuff brought these pancakes to another level.

Room service breakfast- ok, pricey, large portions. I got to eat breakfast in my jammie pants in bed. Worth the price!

SPA

I'm not a spa chick so this my first time. Elemis Spa at Mohegan has it all- salon, facials, massages, bathing treaments, wraps, sauna, steam room, bubbly pool thingyx2, pool, solarium, workout room.

I rate the spa at A-. The A- is for the Relaxation Room- relaxing with all the refreshments needed but small and there was a chick in there having a field day with the ice machine. I wanted to smack her.

The lighting was very low, there were candles lit everywhere, the air was perfumed but no cloyingly perfumed and the robes were big and comfy!

I had a deep tissue massage and a facial and they were both wonderful. I felt very comfortable with both the technicians (?). They both answered all my questions, were never condescending, were very professional. They both had several years experience under their belt and spoke or didn't speak- taking cues from me.

Products were not pushed on me- only reccomended and a list left for me when I checked out. The facial tech actually told me that if I couldn't afford the products, to just mash up some fresh papaya and use that as a facial twice a week!

I also got a shampoo/trim and the salon was nice, clean, and my hair dresser very funny & chatty!

Pricey- yes! Worth it- yes! I'm a new spa convert thanks to Elemis at Mohegan. It was really a wonderful experience!

CASINO

$10 Blackjack tables were easily found, generous slot machines were not. in the end, Hubby broke even and I was broke. The Casino of the Earth is the oldest one and you can tell- it has a scent of smoke though not strong and the carpet looks a bit outdated. The Casino's of the Sky & Wind are newer, no smoke smell at all. Drink service was practically non-existent at the slots and good at the tables as long as you tip a little.

All in all, I really enjoy Mohegan Sun even though we spend oh so much money there! I love the decor, I love the rooms, the view and now the SPA! Great food, very professional staff etc make it a great place to hang out for a couple nights.

I like Elemis products. But pricey you are right.
I had a facial in Scottsdale and I did buy a masque. Just used it yesterday and I love it.

Spas are a good thing!
Glad you enjoyed your days away!

Lysa - thanks for the trip report! I've been dying to take a long weekend at Mohecan! Did you know Jimmy Buffett will be playing there in November? I was considering going, but lodging was out of sight that weekend! Maybe next year...

yes we did notice that buffet will be there in november but not until we checked into our room- doh!

if we had know, we would have booked for that weekend. hubby used to be a die-hard parrot head but we haven't seen a show for years.

the room price is outrageous especially if you are staying there for the first time. but once you have stayed there and spent a little bit og money, they send you discounted rooms rates every month. at least, that's what they did for us and we are NOT high rollers.

if you can get a few days off work, i'd definitely do a mon/tues. it really is a nice hotel and spa and casino!
