We have played the airmile credit card game for about 4 years now and have had 8 round trip tickets paid for in this time. American just came out with this from Citi. Just pay your bill off in full each month and ya can't go wrong. Cancel at the end of the free year and ya got yourself a free tick or two.

Just to let you know some of the possible downsides.
The annual fee for this card after the first year is minimally $75. That is what I pay 3 yrs after the same signup.
AA Reward travel is very limited. I don't know how it works for other airlines, but there are 4 free travel award seats per flight, and 3 upgrade award seats per flight.
AA "fees" you to death. I know nothing is free, but maybe another non-airline miles program might have less fees and more options.
I use my citi aa card for business, so it's not really a huge deal, but I'd still love a diffrent option righ now.

MrB ya cancel before the first year is up. It's free the first year.
True may be limited avalability but we have not had that problem as we vacation on what they have available. Four free ticks this year threw Citi AA Mastercard, my wife and I both have one.
Ok your right each roundtrip ticket had a $15 dollar fee but that's reasonable in my book. We do carryon no baggage fees. So in four years at 400 dollars a ticket, good average for our neck of the woods, adds up to about $3200 dollars in almost free ticks.
You forgot one other thing it does ding your credit a little bit when ya cancel but we don't have to worry about that with our credit rating.
May not work for everyone but works great for us.

If you cancel within the first year, do you get to keep the miles you earned?

Another thing to consider is that opening & canceling credit cards effects your credit score in a negative way.

CG yes you keep the miles once there in your account once you satisfy there agreement which I think for this card is purchase $750 in the first for months.
Good points to bring up don't want peeps to get a card that won't work for them. Look at your circumstance and make an educated decision. I Should not have said can't go wrong. They have just worked great for us. I'm using my excellent credit score to my advantage. If ya don't have a great score and can't afford a ding you shouldn't do it.
