A week in paradise - Day 3 (JVD & Flip-Flop sighting?)
Posted: Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:44 am
Well, this was the only day of our trip that I had actually planned before arriving. I don't think I ever mentioned the dates of the trip, but Day 3 was Friday, June 26th.
We got up early after trying to sleep in, had coffee and breakfast and then headed to town to meet our charter on the beach in front of High Tide. We parked at Suttons and let them know we would be gone most of the day sailing, so they could move the Jeep however they needed during the day.
Side note: To me, I would have done this as common courtesy regardless of who I had rented from, but for those that have voiced concerns or problems about renting with them, this type of respect and courtesy is how their family operates. It's how I was raised and how I hope I've raised my kids, so I don't see it as going out of my way to be nice...just normal. Side note over.
OK, so back to the story. We were sailing with Survivan (Jason and Lou Carter) to Jost. I didn't know if it was going to be just us or not, as I had told Lou that I would pay for 3 passengers if she couldn't get any others to go that day (3 guarantees the trip). They only take 6 passengers, and it turns out they had one other couple going with us as well as Lou's sister Kristi, who acted as a 2nd mate. Jason showed up on time and we piled in the dinghy to start the adventure.
We stopped for a short snorkel at Henley Cay, where the Sergeant Majors were spawning, but the Saharan dust was very bad on this day, so it was almost overcast and the underwater pictures weren't so hot. Here's a couple from the stop:

The reef here looked really nice. There was a bit of chop, which made the snorkeling a little rougher, but it is basically open water and to be expected.
The sail over to Great Harbour to check in with customs/immigration went smoothly with great winds getting us there ahead of schedule.

Picked a couple of souvenirs at Foxy's while my wife made friends with Taboo (though that appears really easy to do!) and then headed over to White Bay. We achored about 50 yards off the beach and took the dinghy in to the Soggy Dollar. We bellied up to the bar to get some Painkillers from Mic and order some lunch from the kitchen. My wife got the cheeseburger, and I got the CHICKEN ROTI... and man is that stuff delicious. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/3 ... !!!"></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34283698@N03/3696809508/" title="Mic in action by KTinTX, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3514/369 ... ec2d_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Mic in action"></a>
This shot looks like I've already had my share of painkillers, but it was actually me getting our first ones. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/3 ... nice boat.<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34283698@N03/3696053855/" title="Survivan on White Bay by KTinTX, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3485/369 ... 93cc_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Survivan on White Bay"></a>
I also have to add that White Bay is one of the best places to kick back and people-watch. You might even meet Noodle Man, or one of his friends, that tries to drunkenly dance and play with his noodle while bobbing up and down on the back of their catamaran charter!<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/3 ... the meal: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34283698@N03/3696082473/" title="Zozo's view again by KTinTX, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2445/369 ... 19de_b.jpg" width="1024" height="681" alt="Zozo's view again"></a>

To wrap it up, I highly, highly recommend a trip aboard Survivan with Jason and Lou. They are very nice people that make you feel at home on their boat. Jason and I both graduated from Texas A&M, and I told him that I think I had the wrong major since his anthropology degree got him a gig sailing in the VI's for 8 months of the year and I got a 7-5 (or longer) job with my engineering degree!
Tune in for Day 4 as we head to Trunk since there were to be no cruise ships in port on STT.
