Anyone got a recommendation for 1-2 nights in LaJolla, CA near the ocean and slightly reasonable?

Not sure that there is much in the way of "reasonable" but my choice would be La Valencia.

I didn't stay there but we ate there and walked around and it's charming.

Last August we stayed at "Hotel La Jolla by The Shore". It was the most reasonably priced hotel we could find. If you consider a 10 minute walk, it is near the ocean. There is a shuttle and they provide beach cahirs for guests. Its not direclty in La Jolla but just outside. There long range views of the ocean from the higher floors. Its on La Jolla Shore Drive on a busy street but I never heard any street noise. There is a small pool and work out room. The room we had was large with a balcony overlooking the garden. They have a roof resturant which we did not try. Our room was not one of the renovated rooms, but it had been freshened with new paint, carpet and bedding. The new rooms are very modern.

Terry---This Spring we stayed in Del Mar, which is one town up the coast from La Jolla. We actually prefer Del Mar, but both towns are very nice. We stayed at L'Auberge del Mar, which was very nice and has just been completely remodeled. We ended up getting a good deal but their rack rates are high. There is the Best Western Stratford Inn a few blocks down the street from L'Auberge that is in a very nice location in Del Mar and is more reasonably priced.

Thanks for these suggestions. I have family all over that area, but prefer not to stay with family this time. One of our favorite restaurants is in Del Mar, the Poisiden (sp?) We used to go there when it was not as pricey and fixed up. It's nice sitting on the beach and enjoying a meal.

Welcoming more suggestions if there are more out there...

Arrive in July...one of the areas busiest months, I know.

Got lucky and got a discount at a major hotel chain through a friend. Under $100 per night with employee discount.

I love having great family and friends in the hotel and resturant management industry. :D

We always pay it forward to them in many ways. Gift cards, etc. They tell us one of the best ways is to send a thank you card to their manager on what a wondeful job they do, etc. I actually got a hand written note back from the manager of the St. Regis in Aspen thanking me for spending the time to let him know how our stay was. Sometimes it's the small things that help people out in the workplace.

I also work with hospitality industry and I have to say that hotel people are usually super duper! I'm sure they get their share of complaints but rarely hear positive feedback. They are happy to pay it back to you in small ways like a bottle of wine or a fruit plate in your room when you stay there. :D

I'm glad you got such a great deal! If you need any local "eyes" let me know and I'll check things out for you up in my neck of the woods!

CAGirl,
You have to be pretty successful with your wonderful photo skills and friendly ability to sell.

We'll be in touch with you for our next big trip to someplace in Europe. I've been out of the travel sales business far too long to really do it myself.

The friends and family we have in the restaurant/hotel business are our kids and their friends. They all graduated with the hotel/restaurant degree within a few short years ago and are now successful in all parts of the world. When they come home, we definitely host a dinner party for them all! Doesn't hurt to kiss-up! It's been a great career for them all, even with the recession.

Note to all having college bound kids...it's a pretty good major to have!

Ahhh... to have it to do over again, eh? LOL! Unfortunately I won't be able to help you with your trip, as #1 - I work for an incentive agency and we only do stuff like "President's Club" trips (think AIG at the St. Regis) and #2 - My boss is retiring Oct. 1st and I'll be out of a job. I hope to hook up within the industry doing Virtual Asstant and Travel Staff work. We shall see. In the meantime, I'll definitely welcome you when you walk into my Wal-Mart!
