Can you sit up top or do you recommend the inside? Can you get a drink on board?

Yes we are newbies :o

Car ferry or people ferry??

Either way you can sit up top but no drinks served on the people ferry but there is a bar on one of the three car ferries.

Thank you! we will be on the people ferry. So what do you recommend up or down?

For people ferry, I like the top because I tend to get motion sickness down below. However, it can be hot and be sure to wear sunscreen.

No drinks on the people ferry - you can't even carry one on :(

Depends on the time of arrival :)

I sit downstairs in the a/c as I hate to sweat :) but if I arrive after 6pm and the sun is down - upstairs.

Should you choose upstairs do apply sunscreen I've seen toooooo many people arrive with a burn even after sitting the short 30 mins (10 min wait time if they board first and 20 min travel time) - not the way to start a vacation :(

And remember, no bathing suit tops for women or shirtless for men - considered disrespectful to locals (not that you would but I thought I would mention it  ) same for walking around town - always need to be covered.

Ditto to what Pia said.

Funny thing though... this past December we were on the ferry from downtown CA to Cruz Bay around 3pm.

We always sit inside because everyone's always fighting for upstairs seats and after being on a plane all day I like to be where people are not up my ass.

Anyway, we're sitting down below and one of the guys form the boat grabs this cooler and starts walking around and asking if anyone wants to buy a beer or soda.

Now in all the years I have taken this trip I have NEVER had this happen before.

He was wearing the ferry service shirt and he was helping bring luggage on so he was clearly an employee but I wonder if this is a "new" service authorized by the ferry co. or if it's just a little enterprising side business he had going.

Since there are signs all over the place on the ferry saying no eating or drinking I just didn't feel comfortable saying yes.

We weren't interested and we didn't ask how much he was charging but I wished him a good day and good luck.

No doubt if the Coast Guard inspectors catch him it probably won't go over well. But the guy had a GREAT idea!!

After being couped up in planes and airports (and probably leaving crappy weather at home), I love sitting up top with the sun and the breeze.

Like everyone else says, slather on the sunscreen, attach your hat clip, put on the shades, AHHHH!

Have a great trip!

We took the people ferry last April and asked the woman at the gate if we could bring our drinks on board. She said only if we were sitting on the top. Up we went, painkillers in hand. It poured rain on us, but somehow we didn't care. :o

It makes perfect sense to drink on the car barge as opposed to the people ferry  .
