Gromit Tip # 5,687: Walkie Talkies are great for groups

I know I've mentioned this before but a little set of walkie talkies can be a great thing to bring if you're traveling with a larger group or in multiple vehicles.

It allows you to communicate instantaneously between vehicles, which can be handy if the lead car encounters a heard of goats in the road ahead or comes to a sudden arborial stop (West Wing fans will get this joke) just around a corner.

They have proven to be an invaluable asset over the years and saved us from having to make multiple trips for things. They are also good if you want to split up while shopping.

They are also handy if you want to play tour guide and tell newbies what they are seeing if they are in a separate vehicle.

Ours are rechargable and we just bring the charging base along and recharge them at night.

We also kepe the volume down when we are in public places, because they do have that potential to be annoying if you aren't careful. But respectful use of these little gems can go a long way.

They certainly aren't a necessity but they are a "nice to have" and you don't have to worry about any pesky roaming charges.

We used them last week. It worked great with the newbies in the jeep behind us.

Okay, this suggestion does make some sense, but it is the perfect example why, for us, we don't vacation with other couples.

"This is Alpha, do you read me Bravo? Out."
"Loud and clear, Alpha, this is Bravo, Out."
"Passing Pine Peace and approaching Jacob's ladder, Alpha out."
"Read you Alpha, had to slow for a local chatting by the entrance to Pine Peace, what's your 411? Out."
"Alpha here, water truck bearing down the ladder...watch your position. Out."

[long pause and dead air]

"Bravo, this is Alpha, do you copy...I repeat...do you copy...for god's sake, say something man!"

Also a great way to let young teens/preteens a little freedom at resorts ( Westin) but still keep in touch. If they said they would be at the pool and now want to go to the beach & you are enjoying a lovely lunch with hubby, they don't have to run to the restaurant to let you know they have changed location. We used them at a swim meet in Ft. Lauderdale & had our daughter call us before she swam so we could walk over from the beach for each event. Beats sitting in the stands for hours :)
