ATTACK OF THE KILLER SKEETERS

Up at 5 am about the same time as the roosters get up. I know it’s ridiculous to get up that early while on vacation but I’m a creature of habit and I can’t sleep in late. Well for some reason, can’t quite put my finger on it I’m feeling a little rough around the edges this morning. Oh I know what it must be no Uncle Joes chicken last night as they were out, yea that must be it. The fried bologna sandwiches we had instead must not have done the trick Uncle Joes chicken withdraw that must be the problem. Nuthin a pot of fresh brewed coffee can’t straighten out. Coffee in hand I head for the porch, well I takes about a whole minute for the skeeters to molest me so I head back inside. This really sucks cause that’s one of my favorite things to do while on St John just me and the roosters watchin the world come to life while the caffeine performs it’s magic. Oh well we have lots of windows looking out so it’ll have to do until the skeeters get better

Andy is up next then the girls rise about an hour later. Andy and I start breakfast you guessed it bacon and eggs but with a twist. We stole the breakfast burrito idea from MickyD’s and made our own version which kicked butt they are delish melted cheese and salsa YUMMY. After breakfast we pack up the entire villa for the beach and head out. What beach we all agree to start with Hawksnest for ease of use since we have the villa with us. We arrive OH YEA snorkeling conditions look good, wasn’t able to snorkel here last time on island due to North swells. We get our favorite spot and HOLY $HIT Great swarms of bloodsucker’s rape us. I kid you not these suckers were out in biblical proportions, every one run for the water before we need a blood transfusion. We set up right at the waters edge and the girls and Andy slathered on off. I made a beeline for the reef to snorkel figured I’d be safe out there. The snorkeling was great the algae were of no issue and I was in snorkeling heaven. The elkhorn looked great and all was good in my little water world. Back on land it was invasion of the skeeters even in full sun so after about an hour we blow the joint and head back to the villa. Before leaving we did witness a wedding on Gibney. Bet that will be a welting I mean wedding they never forget skeeters and all. Hope they had Deep Woods Off with them. They arrived by sailboat and everyone was tendered in.

Back at the villa we cook up some lunch and try to hang out by the pool as the skeeters eat lunch with us or I should say have us for lunch. Screw this we head inside crank on some tunes and get our party on. Sun is out, beautiful day and here we are being held hostage by these damn skeeters . Well were mad as hell and were not going to take it anymore ROAD TRIP BABY. We head East nowhere in particular really just outside somewhere in the great outdoors enjoying St John’s beauty even if were hostage in the jeep. We see many of St John’s locals as we sing along with Steve Miller and enjoy the ride. Dawny was our chauffer as I had just one too many lemonade and taterjuices to be driving. Now I had a buzz on but did I really just see that yes I did someone took all the signs down at the intersection in Coral Bay what the hecks up with that, it was a landmark and very helpful to boot

lets go cruisin

We get back from a great road trip and clean up for dinner. It is Andy and Dawns anniversary and Dawny feels like Italian. I recommend Café Roma as I have heard good stuff about it from forum folks and it sounds good to them. Andy absolutely loved his meal wouldn’t shut up about it was talking about it two days later some kind of seafood linguine stuff it was really good he gave me a taste. Teresa and I enjoyed ours too just not quite as much as Andy I thought he was going to have a orgasm he liked his so much. Dawnys chicken parm was top notch also. What’s up with that bread and olive spread is that to die for or what, we got seconds of that goodness. I could of made a meal of that stuff and a couple beers YUMMY! Tummies full and tired from partying earlier we are beat and head home for bed. Hit the sack as soon as we get back, 9 o’clock tops pathetic aren’t we.

Sorry the mosquitoes were so bad. I knew when we were there and had that "gully-washing" rain they'd be out in full force..Sounds like you made the best of it..
When you booked your villa did you know that construction project was going to be going on below??

Wow, those skeeters were fierce. Usually when I'm reading trip reports...I feel like I want to be there. No offense cptn, but I'm honestly glad I wasn't In our 10 years we've been going down, we've only experienced an unrelenting attack of skeeters once and it was in the month of October when it was one completely hot, humid and rainy trip. Every time we ventured out it was an assault. I was on a first name basis with the pharmacist. Yikes, I felt bad for the wedding party, one girl looked like she was scratching her arm off, but at least the bride got to wear a long dress and her legs were covered. I hope the week gets better for you!

Finding fun even when you're being swarmed is pretty admirable! I'm sure the "tater juice" helps with that?

You know, I always wonder about brides that haul traditional looking wedding DRESSES, as in long, puffy and likely very warm, to the tropics. And

Looks like most of the guests got a little wet on the way in.

If we had it to do over, it would have been on the beach in STJ in white linen.

Speaking of Hawksnest, we saw a wedding there in Feb 08 and after the ceremony, the groom picked up the bride and charged into the water with her.

Cptn - the view and wall looks familiar... did you stay at Kabej Patch? Also, try limitimg the width of your photos to 4 or 5 inches. Wide photos on this forum set the width of the page for text and the constant back and forth scrolling is a pain. (or maybe it's just my browser) :)

What a hilarious photo of the bride getting into the dingy. Can’t imagine having a wedding amongst those mosquitoes.

I have to tell you that I laughed out loud when I saw the pictures of the wedding party. Why?? We were at Hawksnest probably a few days later (5/27) and my 18 year old son found a paper parasol. We have a very humorous photo of him holding the parasol. We keep telling him he looks quite fetching and it makes us laugh everytime we see it. Now we know where it came from. As soon as I have some time I will post the picture

Ohhhh cptn! I feel your pain! We had the same kind of skeeter situation in '07. It's so disappointing to sit inside and look out at the pool! Good for you for taking a road trip! Donkey picture! Yay! :D
