Looking for options for trip #2

As you can tell, we reallllly liked St. John! We're trying to put together another trip in the Autumn or early Winter (which starts around September here in Western NY)....
Looking for some ideas on lodging. We are no-frills people. We want a kitchenette to cook dinners in, a small place. Air conditioning not required. The cottages at Cinnamon Bay were more than adequate for our needs but what would be one step up from the cottages.
When is it safe to book and not worry about hurricanes?

Re: hurricanes, if you are worried buy trip insurance. We have gone twice in October, and loved it! The water is calm and very warm, and the island is very quiet.
I've always thought that this little studio on Great Cruz Bay is cute. $1750 in the off season, with AC and a hot tub:

Here is another cute little cottage. $1575 in the off season:

I stayed here last July it was a great place for the money. I would be staying there again this year but, we are going in August this time and they won't be there. I highly recommend it.

If you want something simple, cheap and basic and walking distance to Cruz Bay Star Villas is OK.

Keep in mind a lot of restaurants and businesses close in Sept.

Hi Minde,
I'm exactly on the same page as you. Cinnamon Bay was fine, but...
From experience I can tell you that Concordia is a step up. My husband and I stayed there last year. He and I are likely going to return this December, and we're looking at Sailview (
www.sailviewstjohn.com). It's mentioned a lot on the forum, and Pia recommends it, so it must be good

There is also Samuels Cottages or Snails Pace. Sailview always gets good reviews.

I would absolutely consider one of the condos at Cruzviews. I think they look cute and very reasonable...I told my hubby if we had to do a budget vacation this would probably be my first choice. You can't beat $125.00/night for two people...

Minde,
If memory serves me, Blaine didn't really dig the Cruz Bay scene. Are you looking for recommendations for a particular part of the island?

I gotcha! The only thing that we really missed was having somewhere nice to sit in the evening. There was nothing available to sweep or clean off the porches and they felt grimy. I should have asked, I guess. Even when we're camping in the woods, we have a clean "spot."
If we can go 2-3 times/year in basic digs, versus once every couple years in a palace....we're picking the basic digs for sure

I'm looking into all of the suggestions. Thanks, everyone!

Minde & Blaine-
I'm sure you're going to get more than enough info on places to stay, so I'm just going to put out an invite to witness My Sweet Amy & I get married during the 2nd week on November if you're there.
Still lots of work to do, but we'll be there!
Good luck & always
Smiles-
MJ

We just stayed at 'The Crow's Nest' in Coral Bay. 3rd floor studio apartment on the main road across from Skinny's and 1/2 block from Donkey Diner. Front porch has good view of the bay.
With the current economic conditions, I am sure that you could probably get a good deal. Price was VERY reasonable when we were there last week.

Lavender Hills unit 5W. Very clean, cable, ac in living room and bedroom, full kitchen, and at that time you could probably deal and get in around 1000.
2 minute walk to Cruz Bay
