When I went down to STJ a couple years ago on a solo visit, I was surprised with a wonderful companion at my villa, Sunnyledge: a feral cat that had wandered up to the villa the week before. Although I was instructed not to feed it...I did, and he was wonderful company. I was delighted when, a few months later, the villa owners let me know that he had been officially adopted as the "villa cat" and had been named Pouncer, Pouncer, the Wondercat. I was lucky enough to be able to visit Pouncer many more times over the past couple of years.

Sadly, Pouncer passed away on May 17 of unknown causes. He was a good cat and he will be missed.

I know we all enjoy the "surrogate pets" that we encounter when on island, many of us missing our own pets. Who is your favorite? In honor of Pouncer, please share your favorite villa pet.

Sure, even the lizard that watches you in the shower counts.

Barney and Frankie at Luna Vista are the cutest, sweetest doggies I've ever seen, besides my own. Porkchop and BB are adorable cats too. I don't have my own pis, but you can see them on their web site.

There was an old iguana that I thought stared at us in the pool at Hale Lani, but I don't think we've ever had a cuddly pet anywhere I've stayed. Mostly it's just been lizards, crabs and scorpions.

I always see places that mention there is a pet on the property and think that might nice to be a little more like home. Maybe I'll do that next time.

Poor Pouncer.

Inside the house, my favorite pet was a little lizard that lived inside of a conch shell that was in the living room of a villa we rented on Maria Bluff. It would come out and run all around the room and then go back into the shell.

Outside, another Maria Bluff house had a siamese cat that lived in the grassy area by the walkway to the bedroom pods. She'd always be waiting for us when we got back from the beach. I read in the guest book that she relied on guests for food, so we fed her daily. She was one picky cat! A bowl of milk? No. Lunchmeat? Nope. Leftover rare seared tuna from Tage? She'd eat the whole thing!

I don't have any villa pet stories, but I do seem to find all the dogs and cats (and more) on every visit. And of course one of my favorite places to stay has a couple cute dogs I adore.

I don't think a trip would be the same without seeking out some cute critters.

"Spam" the Sea Spirit Villa cat, who at 17 plus years, welcomed us so warmly on our first St John adventure. He was showing some age with tattered ears, poor teeth, white hair in the black, but he was so loving and our constant companion when at the villa. We were very sad to learn that he crossed the rainbow bridge a couple of months later...he was certainly part of our best St John experiences.

Sorry to hear about "Pouncer".

Pouncer was indeed a pretty cool cat. We enjoyed his company while at Sunnyledge in March. RIP Poucer

We had a Feral Cat we named Kitty that i fell in love with!
When we went shopping the first day my hubby had to stop me from buying the whole cat food section
We made sure that we made it clear in the guest book to feed kitty twice a day and left lots of cat food for the next guest
Even when we went back the next year (stayed somewhere else)and went to visit he ran right up to me!
Since then he has been adopted out to a good home.

we had sooo many cats at sago cottage on calabash boom. a big group of ten would show up for breakfsat and dinner then scatter- all feral but for one.

the one who hung around would purr, purr, purr and cirle me and rub up against me. we named him "Earl" i think.

there was a nasty one in the group, no one liked him, we called him "George Steinbrenner".

When we stayed at the Westin two years ago we had three fluffy friends that always visited us while we sat outside our gardenview room.
