Does anyone know if you can purchase calling cards in St John to call to Canada???

When we were just there, our daughter-in-law was having difficulty with her pregancy & we had to make a few calls home. We have a calling card for our local phone provider, but the 1-800 numer would not work & we had to call collect, to a total of $200.00 phone bill when we got home for 30 min.

By the time we make this next trip our bundle will have arrived, but still want to have the option to call home if needed.

I have one that I bought at K-Mart years ago that I use when the cel phone won't work. It's through Sprint and it's good for international calling as well. It runs about .05/minute and you can add more minutes over the phone. It's a toll free number and I've never had any problem.

Hope this helps.

500 minutes for $22.00, I think it is ATT. I still have not used up the original minutes from 2 years ago.

Ruth,
We have had good luck with locally purchased phone cards. I had read that stateside toll free doesn't work in the VI and that it was best to buy a calling card locally. I think we bought one for five dollars with 100 minutes on it. We used it from our villa...so I'm not sure about using it at a pay phone while out.
Also, most stores don't have calling cards visibly displayed. you have to ask the cashier for them.
I think we bought our cards at Lily's and Pine Peace Market
We got terribly annoyed with our cell phones, I have Verizon, so the roaming rates were ridiculous...my husband has Cingular and for whatever reason he could never seem to get a signal from our villa on Francis Bay :x
Hope this helps....I know the local cards ended up being the way to go for me and my family :)....mia
