So as its hard for me to read this forum with no trip to stj planned in the immediate future I sometimes go a few weeks without reading so when i do get on I browse through the pages that I missed. As I was browsing I was thinking about how I promised myself that I would do 8 tuff miles in 2010 and have done not much to prepare for it. In order for me to do it I will have to lose a considerable amount of weight and get in MUCH better shape than I am in now... So here is what I'm thinking... we should use this wonderful forum as a type of support group as we countdown to the race in February. What better way to support and inspire each other with our progress! Can you imagine how good it would feel to begin a weeklong vacation in stj completing that race? I personally sometimes feel like im being frivolous spending all the money it costs to get down to the islands but I feel the commitment to getting healthier to achieve this goal would make the trip well worth the cost! Let's team up to take on those 8 tuff miles so we can enjoy the most fulfilling stj vacation yet!!! Who is with me?

Island Chef - I support you but if you really want to lose weight...leave Lousiana...the food is too good...especially in Lafayette
Seriously, good luck on it. I am sure your fellow forumites will support you and whoever else is gonna do the 8 Tuff Miles.

I has this problem in Florence this winter - after making much progress in health and weight since being here, the "food is too good" factor caught up with me this winter...

My son said I should plan a trip down because I always lose weight before I go.

I'll support you and encourage you in your efforts to run "8 tuff miles". I will not be participating. Those 8 miles are tuff enough for me to drive, no way will I run them. You and I both live in flat country. Do you have any idea how hard that is going to be? Not to discourage you....I'm sure you are young and fit......not old and lazy. Best of luck to you. Now get on that treadmill and crank that incline up to 10!!!

I have plenty of hills to train on, but I am still old and fat, so I need to get off my hind end and use every available minute to train. It'd be nice to have a place to check in with other people who are doing it. Great idea!
I've decided if I get to St. John and think I can't make it (which could possibly happen), I will just sleep in the air conditioning and then roll on out to Woody's instead. Nothing lost.

Great Idea! My husband did this race a few years back, but he is a marathon runner and loves running those hills. I would be up for encouraging you and will particpate if we're on island that time next year. I'm not much of a runner - just had knee surgery actually. But if I am there, I will at least do a run/walk with you. Good Luck!

I'm just bumping this thread up because FOR REAL I am going to start training tomorrow. Not any of this stuff where I say I'm training and then take a nap. FOR REAL. (Yes, this is a little pep talk to myself, too.)
Anyhow, this race will be here in 38 weeks, and I am way out of shape. I really don't want to take my chances with the health clinic, so I need to get some encouragement, and I think everyone else who's doing it could use some too.
We could start our own little "8 Tuff Miles" thread if people think it would help. Put training updates, questions, etc. there. It seems like people were into the idea, but it doesn't seem to have really taken off. Unless I'm missing the thread, which is possible after a week without Internet...

WOO HOO I I can do 8 Tuff Miles, so can you!! I walked the entire race and jogged the final mile or so (downhill!) Its a GREAT time to be on island and we plan it for the beginning (Thurs-Thurs)of our trip and RELAX after we have finished ther race! We are a group of 8 doing it this year and my goal is just to finish sooner than 2008. Good luck, its great fitness motivation and pm me if you have ANY questions!

I think I've talked my family into a Feb. 2010 trip for this. Now we just have to find a place we can all fit into.
Or, if I'm unemployed, a tent I can setup at Cinnamon.
Either way, I need to finally do this race.

Thaks JMQ...since I broke my ankle a few years ago I haven't had the stamina or maybe it's the heart I haven't had( who knows ) to run myself back into shape. Great article. I've been so discouraged and this has perked my interest and is something I'm going to try! Hope to lose the - - extra lbs I'm carrying around with me too!
