Been to STJ a few times, and have read these forums for a while. Seems like May has not been the usual month:

* algae plume & "swimming in a snow globe"
* excess jellyfish & sea lice from the algae
* torrential downpours
* potentially harmful storm-water runoff
* rain, rain, and more rain
* mosquito-palooza

What next? (don't say swine flu)

I know, I know, it'll be magical as always. I'm having a hard time feeling that just now, and I bet I'm not alone.

Reassure us, wise ones. Some positives to go with the negatives, please.

Yes, please, and maybe some more rainy day fun ideas. We're going to try our best to ignore the pesky bugs, precip., puddles and foggy water and concentrate on ALL the good stuff: no responsiblities except having fun, unsurpassed beauty, warm temps, friendly people, good food, better drink, and plenty of opportunity for adventure.

And when you get there it could be beautiful..Think positively! You'll be in St. John!

Was just telling Paula about all this and we had a good laugh. Went something like this:

me: So apparently it's been raining buckets for like the last ten days, but everyone's happy about it because it gives them a break from the insatiable mosquito swarms that cut through gale-force winds to attack people's scalps. Some guy said, "To beat the mosquitos, put your snorkel gear on in the car and then run like hell into the water", which would be a plan, but for the veritable tide of jellyfish and sea lice, which sting you all over, all at once, nevermind the bacteria in the water and the fact you can't see anything anyway in the pea green St Patrick's day algae soup. Our best bet is to stay in our room, tape the doors and windows, and don bee-keeper suits to go to dinner.

Paula: (laughing) so why are we going?

me: the comfy beds?


My attitude needs some alignment, no doubt.

It was very rainy this week with plenty of downpours. And when it stopped the mosquitoes were really bad. My wife and I tried to hike to Waterlemon but gave up due to the bugs. Eastern and southern areas were much better as far as the bugs.

The mosquitoes will abate about a week after they hit. If your not on island already you are going to miss the surge. As our local friends (Hugo, Pia, Ruth, etc.) mentioned, the mosquitoes come out about a week after a drought ends due to big rains. Some of the other problems were rain related.

Algae? That's a different unrelated, except for timing, story.
