We will be on island next week with kids. We plan on going over to STT for a day. I think that it is odd that I never hear anyone in their trip reports going to STT. Does anyone on the forum spend time on the big island?

Last year we did....but....it was coming in a day earlier than arrival day on STJ. We stayed at Secret Harbour & had a great time. Our destination was STJ. There was/is so much to do on STJ & so little time that we wanted every moment we could have, to be on STJ.
We had also been to STT before on a cruise stop. Who knows? on one of our future trips to STJ, we might spend some time on STT....just depends. There are alot of great things to see & do on STT also.

We often spend a few days on STT -- usually at the Marriott..... it's a different experience but we have several restaurants we enjoy and find it a great place to stay at the beginning or end of our trips!

We spend all our time on STT. What do you want to know? Things that come to mind are: visiting Mountain Top! The views up there are breathtaking! Take the tram up the mountain that is right there at Havensight. Visit Sapphire Beach, Cokie Beach, Magens Bay. What do you like to do?? Shopping is always great fun for us but I know that is not for everyone.

kma27: We were going to go to Meghans Bay and the girls want to shop in Charlette Amalie. No other plans. Do you suggest a certain resturant for kids? They are 9,12,13, and 18. We like resturants with local flair but that also have a menu for kids.

We hit Frenchtown yesterday and had a great lunch with Capt. Jay and Debbie at Hook Line & Sinker. Frenchtown has a cool & funky character that has none of the Charlotte Amalie crush - smells like fresh fish and ganja.

The beach bar at Magens Beach actually has a pretty good food program and really good Pizza - if you are traveling through town at all -Hook,Line and Sinker in Frenchtown is a fine dockside local place - anything from grilled Cheese to lobster in a casual family friendly waterfront location - the seaplanes are great to watch from there - in Red Hook both Duffys and Molly Malones are good for lunch and Island Tyme grille upstairs in AYH is great for happy hour or early dinner food.

We loved Hook, Line and Sinker too! We had a great dinner there. Nice location too.

We spend a day in STT on every trip. We always enjoy it. Shopping in town is always fun...Imperial Jewelers is a must...and we get a picture taken with Oprah the Donkey on every trip...its become a tradition!!!!

We really enjoy lunch at the Greenhouse & Glady's Cafe & Coconuts in Charlotte Amalie. The CA shops are fun too- just go on a low cruise ship day and walk past most of the jewelry & tourist traps. There are some great little shops in the alleys.

The outdoor/tent flea market up the road from the CA shops is really fun! Lotsa funky stuff and lotsa great people.

The kids might like Coral World too.

I agree with LysaC, we LOVE The Greenhouse GREAT food...our 7 year old LOVES walking around Charlotte Amalie...so much for her to see...and like LysaC mentioned...really great shops in the alleys and the people ARE awesome and friendly in the fle market/tent area...no pressure to buy...just a fun experience...we LOVE going to STT...

We go to STT at least twice every trip to STJ. The day we get there and the day we leave!

Just kidding, we don't make a special trip, but we always go over early on our departure day to shop and eat our last meal at the GreenHouse.

We used to always spend at least one day on STT to do some looking around and shopping for watches, liquor and jewelry. We always picked a day with as few cruise ships in as possible to avoid the crush but usually with at least one ship in so that the shops would be open.

We generally enjoyed lunch at Cuzzin's or Glady's Cafe and then Happy hour at the Greenhouse while waiting for the last downtown ferry back to STJ.

I always enjoyed wandering the alleys and checking out the various shops. Especially around the old warehouses with it's lovely little fountains and nooks to sit and relax. There are some great little shops and artists nestled in these alleyways with the native stonework.

I'll be honest and say that the last time we went to STT was two trips ago. We got over to STT and everything was in overdrive compared to sleepy STJ.

The streets were packed with sunburned cruise ship passnegers with their big hair and wearing their bathing suits and a see thu coverup (and nothing else) while they shopped.

The barkers were relentlesly yelling and trying to get you to go into certain shops (they have since been outlawed so this may have improved); taxi drivers seemed frustrated. Traffic shuffled through the streets. Even the jewelry store owners seemed annoyed by the customers.

We grabbed lunch at Glady's and quite frankly could not WAIT to get back on the next possible ferry to STJ.

Perhaps if we are in search of a specific peice of jewelry or watch or whatever this would have distracted me from all the unpleasantness and the hustle and bustle of downtown. But without a mission to buy I was itching to get back to the relative peace and quiet and the pace of STJ.

Some people love that kind of stuff, but as I get older I go on vacation to get AWAY from all that.

Magens Bay is gorgeous and definitely worth a visit. But honestly I think that STJ's beaches rival Magens without the extra hassle and (now higher expense) of taking the ferry over to STT.

I guess that's why I don't mention going to STT anymore. But that's just me.

We always spend one day on St. Thomas to go to Magens Bay...They have good food and bar service at the beach...Udder Delight is a good stop after a day in the sun...Mountain Top for an afternoon Daquiri and scenic views..The Greenhouse has a good selection of menu items...The girls love the flea market because of its funkiness...Havensight for some window shopping and bargain shopping...The tram up the hill from Havensight is not worth the money....Check out Frenchtown and try not to get lost...Drive out past the college up the hill and watch the planes land...Reload on provisions on ride back to car ferry.
