What do you think about first timers arriving on May 2? I see that it's Carnival. Will that make it impossible for us to get to the ferry? How much if at all does Carnival affect St. John?

Carnival on St. Thomas won't have an impact on St. John. You will still be able to get to the ferry. The taxis can't take their usual route through town because of the parade, so it will take a little bit longer to get there, but you'll make it eventually!
We were on island at that time last year. It's a nice time to be there.

Thank you Liamsaunt! Can someone tell me how far the KMart is from the airport on STT? How would I go about getting a taxi to that KMart? There are just a couple of things I want to pick up there; a propane grill, for instance. I was thinking I'd put my dear hubby at a beer stand and make a solo run over to KMart.
Is that a viable plan?

K Mart is more than half the way to Red Hook from the airport. You could have your taxi from the airport take you there, but It could be hard to get another cab from K Mart to the ferry--regular cabs don't hang around there, just gypsies (illegal cabs). How about contacting a private taxi to meet you at the airport and wait for you at the mall? Or buying one on St. John? I think Paradise lumber (340-779-4480) or St. john Hardware (340-693-8780) would usually have grills in stock.

Oh dear, now I've promised hubby time at a beer stand

I guess I'll keep him company there for a few. I'll check with those two stores on grills. As a newbie I really can't grasp how "remote" or "urban" the islands are.
I'm sure glad you guys are here to help!
