Techni Ice

Based on a number of recommendations here, we packed our newly purchased Polar Bear Coolers with techni ice to bring down food for the week. The coolers are fantastitc, btw - highly recommended.

One caveat...we carried the cooler bags on and the TSA agent informed us that we weren't allowed to bring the ice packs on board as they were a gel. Fortunately for us, I cut the 3 techni ice sheets into 4 smaller sheets each in order to manuever them around the meat, and the diligent TSA Agent only confiscated the one sheet on top, leaving the remaining 11 in the bag.

Has anyone encountered this situation as well? is the techni ice not approved for carry on or is it simply a case of this guy being a particular hard ass on this particular day?

I know some folks check their coolers, but it worked out for us that carrying on would be better and we wouldn't have to worry about incurring the $25 per bag charge for each cooler bag.

We have used it in a carry on cooler for our son's travel food and never encountered a problem. That being said, we always seemed to have great luck with travelling with a child as it related to TSA interactions.

I was, however, prepared to have it thrown out. I wouldn't risk it again.

We don't pack techni-ice in our cooler for carryon for that reason. Our food arrives still frozen.
